Lewis Lee Rushing

Lewis Lee “Peanut” Rushing, 78, of Baytown was born March 2, 1926 in Paris, TX and passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2004 in a local nursing home. He was a U. S. Army WWII veteran and a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Baytown.

He owned and operated Greer Florist in Baytown for 58 years, retiring in 2000. He was a Texas Master Florist and served as president and board member of the Allied Florists of Houston and received their highest award, the Buddy Benz Award. He was a Unit 9D Inspector for FTD and received their Golden Circle Award, and served as president of the Teleflora South Texas Unit. He served as president and board member of the Texas State Florists and received their highest award, the Achievement Award. He was also a member of the American Academy of Florists.

He was a past president of the West Baytown Kiwanis Club and a member of the Baytown Kiwanis Club, where he received their Distinguished Service Award in 1978 and was named Kiwanian of the Year in 1985. He served on the board of directors for the Baytown Chapter of the American Diabetes Association and the Baytown Symphony Orchestra. He was the recipient of the Small Business Award of Baytown.

His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Dr. Richard Kleiman officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Osburne “Chico” Grant, Robbie Sandlin, Ed Ferguson, Trevor Morris, Tommy Carpenter, Matthew Reed, Mark Reed, and Jerry Ruyle.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Lou Roe, son-in-law, Robert “Scooter” Sandlin, and granddaughter, Valerie Sandlin Batten. He is survived by his wife, Frankie Rushing; daughters, Shari Sandlin and Susan Rushing and special daughter Debbie Verret; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Nona Rushing; grandchildren, Kristy Morris and husband Trevor and Robbie Sandlin and Sara Riggs; and great grandchildren, Mallory and Marshall.
