Mary C. Nieto joined the Lord, passing peacefully with her prayer book at her side on February 9, 2026. She was 99 years old.
Mary, also known as Maruca, was a devoted daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend. A fraternal twin, Mary, was born in Baytown, Texas in an area described in the 1930 U.S. Census as the Mexican Quarters.
The Nietos are a founding family of Baytown’s Mexican American community. Twelve in all then, they lived in a sparse two room cabin. A single kerosene lamp illuminated the late night writings of Mary’s father, Vicente. His plays and poems were celebrated fixtures of Baytown’s Fiesta Patrias Parades and other cultural celebrations. His untimely death in 1932 catapulted Mary’s mother, Gertrude, into the role of sole provider as the Great Depression began. That single event arguably defined Mary’s life and legacy, as well as that of her siblings.
As a child, Mary joined her brothers and sisters in finding odd jobs to help their mother. Shoes and clothes were hand-me-downs. And while money was tight, they never went hungry. By virtue of her strength and resilience, Mary’s mother instilled in her the qualities of being a strong, stoic, and sharp woman, a hard worker and devoted family and community member.
Yet, Mary would agree her mother’s faith left the most profound effect. The Nietos are a founding family of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Baytown, Texas, which celebrates 100 years in 2027. As a life long member of the parish, Mary regularly attended mass and was a proud member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Altar Society, dedicated to charitable work. She was devoted to praying the rosary and reading her prayer book daily.
Education was also deeply important to Mary, who sadly couldn’t finish school due to pressing family financial needs. That didn’t deter her. She easily navigated conversations with academic leadership and the student body at Baytown’s Lee College where she worked for more than 20 years. She championed the academic aspirations and achievements of her nieces and nephews, who she quietly gave financial gifts to support their efforts. She was less demure about their professional successes, proudly, loudly and widely sharing news with family, friends and church comadres.
As a Gold Star family member, she proudly spoke of her family’s service to the United States. All five of her brothers served in the Armed Forces, including brother Vicente killed in action in World War II.
Mary was the caretaker of Nieto family mementos and an orator of family and Baytown history. She had deep knowledge of the city’s social and political evolution. Well read, she could talk to anyone about nearly anything, from local news and social happenings to political and global events. Mary often knew the city’s elected leaders and had informed opinions about city politics.
In retirement, Mary loved sprucing up her home, gardening and reading the Baytown Sun front to back. She cut out articles and mailed what she thought might pique your interest. She was a devoted Houston Astros fan, making it appointment tv for her and sister Lydia, whom she lived with much of her life. She was also a fan of the Lee College basketball team. She loved great meals with family and friends, which often ended with coffee and sweets.
Mary is now with the Lord, reunited with her parents, sisters Josefina Nieto, Etelvina Marron, Amalia Hernandez, and Lorenza Estrada and brothers Vicente, Rodolfo, Jose (Mary’s twin), Jesus and Henry Nieto. She is survived by sisters Elvira Barajas and Lydia Castillo, as well as her nieces, nephews and extended family.
The Nieto family gives special thanks to the caregivers and their families who looked after Mary the last years of her life. They are Miriam Cisnero, Lili Cabrera, Dalilah Aguilar, Ludivina Garza, Jade Reyes, Yolanda Mata, Karina Reyes and Ruth Morales. They also give gratitude to Nurse Carlos, Mary’s nurse of over 20 years as well as her devoted doctors and physical therapists.
