

He attended Baytown Schools and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1963. He then went on to attend Lee College from 1963-1965 earning an AA Degree. He married Sharon Overstreet on June 3, 1966, which was the best decision he ever made, and three months later was drafted into the U.S. Army where he went to Ft. Polk, LA for Basic Training and received Advanced Placement after Basic in the “425 Club”. He was the highest-ranking cadet in AIT graduation. He went to Vietnam in 1967 for a year, and then returned to Ft. Polk where he worked in the Adjutant General’s Corp in charge of Line of Duty Investigations. Their daughter Renae was born in 1970, and Sharon quit work to stay home with her.
Michael attended Lamar University in Beaumont from 1969 to 1979 on the GI Bill while teaching school. He received 3 degrees, a BS in Elementary and Special Ed, a Master’s in Special Ed, and another Master’s in School Administration and Supervision. While going to Lamar Mike held down 6 additional jobs: full time teacher, Assistant Principal, teacher of grades 7-9 at night school each night, sold World Book Encyclopedias, sold Shakely Vitamins, and tutored students between day school and night school and on weekends. After receiving his 2nd Master’s, Mike was invited to teach at the Stavanger American School in Norway where he taught for 3 years from 1979-1982. Then he taught at the Walworth Barber American International School of Israel from 1982-1983. Mike and family traveled extensively while overseas, and they returned home in late 1983. Mike taught at Public, Private, and International Schools for more than 30 years. He retired in 2004.
In his youth Mike faithfully attended Cedar Bayou Baptist Church, and after marrying he attended Memorial Baptist Church, where he participated and was very involved in both churches. Mike loved and enjoyed traveling, photography, playing the guitar, and spending time with his family.
Mike is survived by his wife, Sharon Hollaway; his daughter, Renae Sellers; son-in-law, David Sellers; and grandson, Koulton Sellers; and many other extended family members and friends.
A visitation for Michael will be held Friday, November 29, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Navarre Funeral Home, 2444 Rollingbrook Drive, Baytown, TX 77521. Following the visitation will be a committal at Fellowship Cemetery in Warren, TX.
