Monte Rhea West

Monte Rhea Porter West, 93, of Baytown, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022 in Murphy, TX. She was born July 17, 1929 in Franklin, TX to her parents, Richard Bland Porter and Katie Irene Leamon Porter.

Mrs. West had been a resident of Baytown since 1955. She was a longtime member of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church. Monte retired from Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District in 1984 where she served for 32 years. Most of those years she taught second grade at Highlands Elementary School. She held a Bachelor Degree from Hardin-Simmons University and a Masters of Education from the University of Houston.

Mrs. West was like that of an angel in our midst. She loved her family and was loved dearly by them, her church family, her friends and her many former students. She enjoyed spending time sewing, playing games, traveling and making photo albums.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years, Faris West, two brothers, George Lawson Porter and Roland Bland Porter, and a grandchild, Adam Purcell.

She is survived by her two children, Vicki LeVasseur and John David West and wife Lori, grandchildren, Aaron Purcell and wife Kara, Jody West and wife Maria, Tyler West, great-grandchildren, Timothy Purcell, Dylan Purcell, Aiden Adam Purcell, Karsyn Anne Purcell, Colin Jeffrey Purcell, John Patrick Jalufka, Oliver Faris West, Alice Ruby West, Sunny Rose West, Lucy Kate West, and great-great-grandchild, Abigail Monte Michelle Purcell. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. West will be held at Cedar Bayou Baptist Church, 12:00 PM, Saturday, August 6, 2022. A brief grave-side ceremony will follow at Sterling-White Cemetery in Highlands, TX.

Honored to serve as pallbearers: Aaron Purcell, Timothy Purcell, Aiden Purcell, Gary Porter, Jody West, and Tyler West. Honorary pallbearer: Colin Purcell.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Cedar Bayou Baptist Church general fund.
