Nettie Theophine Hurr passed away at the age of 91 on April 17, 2011. She was born on June 3, 1919, in Church Point, Louisiana to parents, Cecile Daigle Beaugh and John Beaugh. When Nettie was two, her father moved the family to Baytown, Texas, seeking employment at Humble Oil. Nettie grew up in Pelly, Texas and was a 1937 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School where she was a drummer in the original drum and bugle corp, ""The Robert E. Lee Brigadiers."" Nettie went on to attend Lee College, graduating Valedictorian in 1939 and becoming the first female to graduate with highest honors. She received a full scholarship from Mary Hardin Baylor College that would have allowed her to complete her college education, but she chose instead to marry Glen Hurr on September 13, 1940.
Nettie was a Godly wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother, serving as a great role model of devotion, compassion, kindness, high moral values, and hard work in hopes that, by example, her family would follow her path. She was an avid reader in her younger years, and her only boast ever was to tell her grandchildren that, as a young girl, she had read every book in the Pelly Library. She also loved writing poetry and short stories of her adventures, detailing them in such ""vivid color,"" one could imagine being there. Nettie had a special place in her heart for babies and small children, as well as all animals. In her later years, it was not uncommon to see her in her backyard surrounded by birds, rabbits, and raccoons in the late afternoon as she stood feeding them and talking aloud to them. Her stray cat, ""Kitty Dog,"" gave her many hours of comfort during her illness.
Nettie ran two businesses with her husband Glen--first, ""Hurr's Food Market,"" which they owned and operated from 1945 to 1958 and second, ""Hurr Glove Co.,"" which they ran together from 1960 to 1982. After the death of her husband in 1982, she continued running the Hurr Glove Co. by herself until age 78 in 1997. Nettie and Glen also shared in the love of the great outdoors and spent many happy hours deer hunting, bird hunting, shrimping, and fishing with family and friends.
Nettie was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Glen Hurr; brother, Bruce Beaugh; sisters, Neva Casey and Janelle Milner; and grandson, Reagan Hurr. She is survived by two sons, Dr. David Hurr and Dr. John Hurr and his wife Arleta, both of Liberty; one daughter, Nettie Ann Biondo and her husband Lee of Dickinson; sister, Johnnie Clayton of Baytown; ten grandchildren, Melissa Poche, Joey Biondo, Kimberly Barnhart, Jason Biondo, Sarah Hurr, Dr. Heather Johnson, Dr. Jennifer Hogan, Heidi Morgan, Mindy Lee, and Ryan Hurr; and nine great-grandchildren, Nathan Doyle, Caleb Biondo, Sydney Biondo, Samantha Biondo, Claire Hogan, Ben Hogan, Isabella Barnhart, Madison Barnhart, and Lyla Morgan. Nettie will be dearly missed.
