I feel like I’m responsible in some way.  Tom went with me on a ski trip to New Mexico.  I thought at the time I had a good friend and that would deserve an amazing man who I just met over several times in passing where I worked with his brother, Jeff Dornak, 

Now I’ve lost my parents, my girls I gave up my whole life for and still doing the right and legal way, I’m still in mourning over every thing I every lost, touched or a connection in anyway shape or form.

But, I know, I miss most of my best friends and best co-workers, but you can’t bring them back no matter how bad you wish upon a star….

Our toughts and prayers go out to your family.  Tommy's kind spirit, helpful attitude, and great sense of humor definitely have a lasting impression on our family.  He is a lasting example of how everyone should treat each other...something that I will never forget.  From his ""Napoleon Dynamite"" impressions to his comforting attitude, he was a joy to be around and will be truly missed.

As a co-worker and as a friend he will be sorely missed. There are no words.

I first met Tommy over 19 years ago and I was impressed by him immediately. In short order he became a intergal part of the diving team at the WETF. He was so full of life and alway cheerful and ready to extend a helping hand to his friends and coworkers. When the diving operations shifted to the NBL were privileged have Tommy as part of diving family. He never changed over the years. Beloved by all who got to know him he will sorely missed.

What a huge loss to everybody that ever met Tommy. In all these years of working with him and his brother Jeff, I canâ€™t remember one time when he was not the happiest and funniest guy in the crowd. My sympathy to his family and I hope it helps just a little to know that Tommyâ€™s loss is being felt in the hearts of a lot of people.

I am so, so sorry to hear of your tremendous loss; Ryan and Austin join me in offering you our most sincere condolences and deepest sympathy.

Even though I was never around Tommy that much, that's not to say I didn't know him and admire him as much as anyone could; he's one of those unique individuals that from the moment you meet them, you just know they are special, wonderful people.  I never once saw Tommy without a smile on his face and seemingly a song in his heart; he was a source of light and you felt better just to be around him.  The world is a less beautiful place without Tommy and everybody who knew him - even just a little bit - will attest to that.  

Patsy and Gene, ""ya done good,"" in raising this boy!  May God Bless You and All of Yours with comfort and understanding, during this most trying and difficult time of your lives.  Condolences are in order for ALL of us, all of us who's lives Tommy touched...and we are better for having known him.

I have been working with Tommy for the past 10 years at the NBL.  He was one of the funniest and most personable guys I knew.  He will be sorely missed by his NBL family and everyone else whose lives he touched.  God bless you Tommy, Jeri and family.

My condolences to the family of Tommy. I worked for NASA (but I am now retired) and one of my duties was to oversee the WETF and then the NBL regarding all administrative work.  I had to work with the majority of the divers and supervisors and Tommy was one of the those that was always pleasant to work with.  God be with Tommy's family.

Sorry for your loss of a great person that Tom was, he always had a kind word for everyone. I worked with Tom at the old WETF and the NBL, I never seen him without a smile and a great attitude, he would help others and not expect a payback. Tommy was such a genuine person. He always made a person feel like it made his day to see them coming. It was Tommy in fact that made ours.

Every memory I have of Tom makes me smile. Your family is in our prayers.

A lot of people ask, â€œWhat can we do?â€  I believe the best thing we can do is try to even become half the person that Tommy was and that will take most of us a lifetime to accomplish. He was deeply religious, physically fit, a walking encyclopedia (with his own way of expressing things), a great diver, a great sportsman, a humble person, sometimes class clown (coming in second with that only to Jeff), and one of the most caring people I have ever met.  I will surely miss him and feel now that he is watching my every move as most of you probably do as well. I was swimming just yesterday and felt that he was right there swimming with me. I have heard some people ask why Tommy would risk free diving to fifty feet to retrieve an anchor. Only Tommy really knows the answer to that question.  In his defense, I can say that he was very experienced and I personally had been before to depths of 75 feet plus with him in the same lake believe it or notâ€¦ trying to retrieve a damn anchor. In my opinion he never thought he was â€œtaking an unnecessary riskâ€. He was determined and only helping someone out as he was always doing.  We should just love him for that and be glad we had the time with him that we all had. I will always miss you Tom and will tell a lifetime of stories about you as will my children.

Outstanding and remarkable are adjectives that speak of Tommy in deficit, description of the boy are difficult in words. To know and have Tommy as a friend has truly affected me for the better, to be a better person, and to know what a good guy is. I do not use that term lightly. Thatâ€™s Tommy, A Good Guy.
I smile at the mention of his name, even now as difficult as it is, he brings me a bit of happiness as he always did. His â€œMr. Haneyâ€ was always a hit, and he also taught me how to do a better Pakistani/Indian accent, which he had down pat (if you ever heard it you know you laughed, it was one of his better accents, he had so many). For me, a better friend I can not imagine. He had a way to see and to show me the best in any circumstance or situation (in doing so he probably saved my job at the W.E.T.F. a few times).
Tammy, Craig, and Jeff, a better brother than Tommy you couldnâ€™t ask for. No offense to you Jeff and Craig, I think yaâ€™ll helped make him just so. Mr. and Momma Dornak you did a outstanding and remarkable job with Tommy and your whole family, you should be proud of that. I think you have a bigger family than you may know, because I was made to feel as part of your family while I had the privilege to be friends and spend time with your sons Tommy and Jeff, and I am sure many others feel the same.  Know this in these times, many of us in your extended family send you our love, prayers, and hope that you may find peace in knowing that Tommy is in Godâ€™s good graces and his loving care. I will always remember Tommy, even in the years when we lived together in Clear Lake. He was always doing something to help other people out no matter what it was. We are deeply saddened for your loss.  I met Tommy when I went to work at the NBL and was instantly taken in by his personality.  He always had a smile on his face and found the light side to everything.  To be part of the extended family of the NBL was a privilege.  When I received news on Sunday, I was in shock and disbelief.  My wife Christine, who also loved being around Tommy because of his whole outlook on life was also shocked.  It really hit home when my 11 year old son asked why we were sad and we told him, he looked up at me and said ""the guy that made all the funny voices and made me laugh"".  A true testament to how your son and brother touch even the smallest of lives and left a lasting impression.
Tommy will be missed, but never forgotten by anyone.

All of my memories of Tommy are good ones.  The man was one of a kind - such a great pleasure to be around.  I feel very blessed that I knew him, that if we were ever to run into each other, he would give me a big smile and a big hug!  When I was little, I thought it was so cool how he would ride that unicycle.  Later, when we were all involved in the TWS, I always looked forward to getting to the next stop to hear him tell a funny story or joke.  He made me laugh until my sides hurt!

Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Tommy was the genuine article and could always brighten up your day. Everytime I saw an old blue chevy pick-up, I looked to see if it was Tommy (The big silver canoe with the shark teeth strapped to the top was a dead give away). Tommy never met a stranger and  earned everthing he got in life. It is hard to imagine he is gone but I know that he is in heaven right now planning his next outdoor adventure. If Tom had a fault, it was that he tried to please too many people.  He was the kind of guy that, whenever he saw that someone might be needing help, he'd always offer no matter who it was.  It was not an empty offer, as many times he pitched in and helped when his offer was taken.  The only thing that might keep him from it is if he had prior family obligationsâ€¦his family meant a great deal to him.  I thought of him as a very close friend, and I wonder how many other people felt the same way about him.  He was so quick with a joke, always finding the humor in anything and everything.  He had a sharp mind for relating whatever was going on to something funny he had heard somewhere else. His wit was rarely meant in a mean way, and in fact was many times self-deprecating.  It was pretty hard to be angry with himâ€¦.and then it was probably only because you were jealous of his easy going nature.  He had a great voice, and was a very good impressionist of some other famous voices, be they real or cartoon characters.  He was a fine athlete, making many things that I know to be tough, look so easy. Because of this, I've known him to have several nicknamesâ€¦.Beefcake, Big Tom, and Doorknob, to name a few.  I was fortunate enough to race the Safari with him on two different occasionsâ€¦once in '98, with my brother Sammy, and our friend Donald Baumbach, and then again in 2000, when it was just Sammy, Tom, and I.  While both those years were tough, for different reasons, I will cherish the memories that I have of them.  I have also had the chance to do some long distance cycling events with Tom, and so was again blessed with the chance to spend some long hours alone with my friend.  He was without ego, and always waited for me when I'd fall behind, rather than keep riding and leave me farther behind.  My tears fall as I read these notes, and I am ashamed for the selfishness I am feeling for my loss.  To his family and loved ones, I wish I could say some magic thing to make it all better again.  We are so much better for knowing himâ€¦.men of such mettle are few and far between.  I know that he is in Godâ€™s arms, but still we will grieve.  Dana and I will always miss him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and may God continue to give you strength during this time.

Tommy was a great person, we are all better because of Tommy and how he touched all of our lives. He has left an empty place in our hearts.  Tommy was a role model to each of us in how he lived his life and treated people.  He has been a vital part of every Space Flight Mission over the past 19 years at NASA.  Every Space Walk was made possible thanks to his contributions.  The Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory will never be the same without Tommy.  He will always be in our hearts.  We miss you Tommy.

Coach ,Mom, Jeff, Craig, Tammy and all faimly members. I like others sit here wiping tears, trying to find the strength to write encourging words. So many of us feel your loss as our own. The Dornaks were and still are such an influance on MANY lives in the Crosby community. Coach and MoM when you first came to Crosby your lives started touching  everyone you came into contact with.  Seems like Tommy did the same with everyone he knew. It should make you very proud to have a son that influenced so many lives, I know Tommy's life/spirit will continue to effect many a person in the years to come, as yall's have.

Like everyone else, I have a hard time coming up with the words to express my deepest sympathies for your loss.

I can say that Tommy has had a profound impact on my life. Many of the positive attributes that I possess are a direct result of growing up with Tommy. He and Craig were kind enough to let me tag along on many adventures  and I will be forever grateful for that. 

I don't think he planned on having my little skinny butt imprint on the back of that Honda 110 three-wheeler when he bought it. But there I was seemingly everytime he pulled that pull rope. 

Tommy, you were a mentor for this little hunting and fishing buddy and I will cherish our times together forever. Your impact on me went well beyond the woods and waters around old Pin Oak Loop.

May God bless you all and use His mercy and grace to help you through these difficult times. I can't wait to hug your necks and swap a few ""Tommy"" stories. (You gotta hear the one about Tommy T-Back in New Braunfels!)

Everytime I saw Tommy - he just made me laugh.  He is just one of those guys that you enjoyed and wanted to hang around with.  Because you knew you would be entertained.  I will miss him dearly.

I was truely sadden upon reading the news about Tommy.  I have known Tommy for a good many years and worked with his brother while at Lockheed Martin.  Tommy help me and my sons to learn to scuba dive.  Tommy was alway full of joy and had a smile on his face anytime that I would see him. Tom, ""Scuba Steve"" to those of us from Jeri's family, was such a great guy.  This can be easily determined by just looking at what everybody else has had to say about him and the way he touched their lives.  What can we say that hasn't aleady been said.  Tom was kind, giving, funny, easy going, and just an all around great person.

He will truly be missed as if he were a member of our own family.  I think that is the best compliment that I can give him.  Tom was the kind of guy that, immediatly after meeting him, you felt like he had been your long lost brother.

I have many great memories with Tommy inside of work and outside of work.
We never walk by each other without a small conversation about something
usally about a hunt or a fishing trip, I know he was a avid outdoorsman which I admired him for
because thats what I and he loved to do.
My family was lucky enough to meet Tommy last week during our safety week we where all out to lunch and again Tommy came over to our table and said hello  to me and my family so Iam really greatful for that.
I will miss his freindship greatly.

We were all shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden and tragic loss of Tommy.  While I did not know him well personally, I knew plenty of him over the years and I know I speak for Tommy's extended family when I say how very proud we all were of him.   Ironically, this past Saturday we took the kids to The Johnson Space Center and Tommy's name undoubtably came up.  He was an example to many -- even if he did not know it!  While there is little we could say or do to sooth your aching hearts over such a profound loss, please know that we carry all of you in our thoughts and prayers during this most trying time.

I wish I knew the words to take away even a small bit of your pain.  I remember voting his team, ""best looking"" as we put in to begin racing in the 2000 Safari. They ended up 4th overall proving they were fast as well!  Tommy's smile was incredible!  His memory lives on in many, many hearts.

It's hard to describe all the wonderful things about Tommy. He had the best attitude about life. He was always positive, funny, nice and such a pleasure and joy to be around. I can't begin to count how many fun times there were with Tommy. All I know is it was fun every time I was around him. I haven't seen him in a while. I hate that I missed him at the Crosby Rodeo. Any opportunity to be around Tommy, was a great opportunity. He was one of a kind and everything that has been said about him is so true. I remember when he was going on his first Canoe race and we were at the KC Hall. He just had to have Father Clint Ressler bless his canoe and that he did. 

I know that it is hard for you at this time to know that Tommy will no longer be with us. I know he was loved and was a great son, brother, uncle, and a friend to many. I am honored to have had the privilege of knowing Tommy. I wish you all the comfort in the days to come. Just know that he is in a good place and he shared more joy with people in a short time than many will do in twice as much time.

Jeri, I haven't had a chance to meet you, but I know that you are feeling such a loss.

Our prayers will be with all of you. I had worked with Tommy for almost 9 years. It didnt take long after meeting him to realize that he was one of a kind. I feel that it was blessing to have worked with him and to have been friends with him. He was a man that I respected a great deal for his faith, his compassion for family and friends, and his ability to bring smiles and laughter to all those around him. We will miss him greatly.

I wish someone would have told me. I will always remember Tommy as a Good and Kind person. I worked with him at the NBL night shift. Tommy was a good friend of mine and i am so sorry that i was not at his funeral. I wish i could have been there but i am just now finding out about his passing.

There are not enough words to express how sad we are to hear about Tommy. One can only be proud to have known a person like Tommy in life, and look forward to seeing him again. Those of us who were so lucky can only hope that we come close to touching the lives of so many people, in so many ways. Wether it be at high tide, a funny movie, or a morning sunrise, Tommy will always a fond place in the hearts of us all. God Bless.

I can still remember as a kid, when I told Tommy I was building a model battleship, he insisted on showing me how to melt the back of the turret with a hot knife so it would turn properly. (Needless to say, he also showed me that not every 10 year old with a pocketknife and a box of matches had bad intentions).  Anybody who met him has a story like that, he would go out of way to help anyone, anytime.  He's probably asking St. Pete right to guard the gates of Heaven, ""Take a break, go get your robe cleaned"".  

Thanks Tommy, I was lucky just to know you.

Jeri & Dornak Family,
Tom, Scuba Steve as we knew him was an incredible person.  He felt like another member of our family as soon as we met him.  He got the nickname at Christmas when ""Santa"" called him Scuba Steve.  From then on he was known as Scuba.  When Tom and Jeri were together you knew they were meant for each other.  We have never seen Jeri happier than when she was with Tom.  He will be greatly missed by his other family.

I am still in shock since Tracy Jo shared the news.  I don't even know what to say - Tom was by all accounts a super great guy! He was one of the instructors who taught Tracy and I to dive - we had such an amazing and totally fun time hanging out with the WTF guys... Tom, Ronnie, Greg, Scott - etc -  Tommy - you touched many hearts and will be missed.  I was blessed to have known you.

Dear Coach Dornak and Family,
We are so saddened by the news of the loss of your son.  From reading what everyone has written, sounds like you raised a wonderful son. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

What a beautiful boy. What a terrible loss. He was an incredible light in the world and will be in our hearts forever. Anyone who met Tommy was forever changed. You couldn't be around him for five minutes without a rib cracking hug or cracking up laughing. I met ""my square headed little friend"" more than twelve years ago when I started scuba training at the WETF. BJ and Bubba sent me to ""Snorkeling Special Ed"" at the shallow end of the pool where Tommy taught me how to snorkel. From that point on, he was always around with a quick joke, a helping hand, a bright smile...and occasionally a thumb over my snorkel just for laughs. He had tremendous heart, incredible wit, contagious laughter and remarkable character. Our lives are all a little richer and happier for having known him. God bless you Tommy and all those who miss you so terribly. Keep smiling on us.

Mary and I were so sad to hear about Tommy.  I love the picture you have of him in the paper.  It seems to me that he always had that kind of smile - like he had just heard or seen something funny.  Like the time I came over with my chain saw that was too short for most all work.  Tommy pulled up in his truck, looked at my chain saw, smiled that smile, and walked to the back of his pick-up where he produced two chain saws that made mine look like a buttter knife.  Thirty minutes later he was 25 feet up in a tree doing what we often saw him doing  while he was at the lake, helping out Mom and Dad.

To Tommy's family and girlfriend my deepest thoughts and prayers are with you. Wow - Tommy - there are hardly words to speak - I am so shocked and saddened to hear of your sudden passing!! I have wonderful memories of diving with you at the WETF and NBL - I remember in particular a time about 10 years ago camping, diving, drinking lots of Yagermeister at Lake Travis, your ""imitations"" around the camp fire!!! Tommy - truly an up-lifting and wonderful person that I will never forget, your hugs and smiles, the ""eye-candy"" us gal's could not wait to dive with (Grin) - when I think of you I think of the prayer of St. Francis - Even though its been awhile since I saw you - I can truly say my life was enriched by knowing you!

I am so sorry for this tragic loss.  I first met Tommy back in 1996 when he assisted my dive class at our open water cert and have known him in his NBL dive capacity ever since.  It's inspiring to see from all the notes here how many people he touched, all over the country.  I didn't know him very well, but he always had a smile and a hello for me whenever I saw him, and would bring a little brightness into your day.  Tommy will be dearly missed at NASA.  Our thoughts are with all of you.

I am so sorry for your incredible loss.  I did not know Tommy well, but he was always friendly, and very well respected at the NBL.  All of us in the EVA Office are grateful for his many dedicated years of service to NASA.

I was so shocked when I opened my paper and read the news about Tommy.  I've read all the wonderful postings about him here.  I, of couse, did not know Tommy as an adult, but felt like I knew him when he was growing up from listening to all the wonderful stories Pat used to share with me about her family when we taught third grade together.

My heart was saddened when I read of your loss.  Althought I never had the priviledge to meet Tommy, it's quite evident he was an amazing young man, loved by all whose lives he touched and a son that made you very proud as parents and as a family.  The loved ones we loose become very special angels that shine down on us and walk with us each day.  That tug at your heart, funny feelings you experience at the strangest times and so many ohter feelings tells us they are there during not only the happy times but the hard times as well to help get us through what seems too be an impossible moment.  Although he is in his heavenly father's arms now he will always remain in your hearts and the hearts of all who knew and loved him until you are all reunited again.

It seems like just yesterday that I introduced scuba diving to Jeff and Marcus. I know I'm not family but it hit me really hard to think I'm the who planted the seed. It seems like Tommy should be last one on earth to have an accident like this. I was just too soon.........

I am sorry for your loss.  Tommy and I were classmates.  It's hard to fathom at a time like this how something so tragic can happen to a loved one.  My prayer is that God will give you strength to endure today and the days to come.

Gina called me last week and told me about Tommy's passing.  I was deeply saddened.  Although I only met Tommy twice, it was obvious that he was a quality person.  Also, as I get older, it seems to be easier to spot families where the kids are brought up the right way.  By this I mean intelligent, respectful, sincere, caring and just plain nice.  I got that impression about your family instantly.  It is something that you should be very proud of.  Tommy seemed to reflect all of these values that you gave him. I am sure that this is why he developed him into the person that made such a meaningful contribution in so many other lives, as well as his country.  You should be very proud of him.  God bless him and may he rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow.  Just know that Tommy is in a better place now, and that he'll be watching over the people that he loved and cared about, always.  And that we here at the NBL will never forget him.   When I started reading the great things that are being said about Tommy, I expected to see mostly people from Crosby that grew up with Tommy and knew him well. But I soon realized that Tommy's zest for life was realized by many people, from all the people he's worked with and been around. From the times I've been around Tommy he was always upbeat and had a great attitude. I'd bet he'd want everyone to carry on that positive attitude. Please accept our heartfelt condolences and know that you guys are still Crosby family and think of you often. May God's grace give you peace.

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Tommy.  Tommy was a wonderfully cheerful and upbeat person - he was a pleasure to be around.  We saw him last at the Safari two weeks ago.  He will be sorely missed.

After reading all of the notes, it seems that Tommy never really changed from the way he was while in school. My family and I want to offer our sincere condolences to your family. I was so shocked when I received a call about Tommy's accident & passing. It was only a couple of years ago that I last saw him. I am out of town and unable to attend the service, but your family is in my family's thoughts and prayers. May God be the one you turn to for strength and support during this difficult time.

There are no words I can come up with that will truly express how heartsick I am to learn of Tommy's passing.  I haven't seen him for many years but I've thought of him often and those thoughts always had a smile attached.  The world without Tommy in it is a much sadder place.  My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this dark time.

We in the Crosby High School community, lost a very good friend this past holiday weekend. The Tommy I remember was truly a friend to everyone he came in contact with. I must admit I have been the worlds worst when it comes to keeping in touch with all whom I went to school with and called my friends, I'd like to think I was friends with everyone, some more than others, but friends none the less. When I got the news on Monday about Tommy's tragic accident the hair on my arms stood straight up and my heart sank. I have only seen Tommy once in the past 23 yrs. and that just wasn't enough. What has happened only proves to each and everyone one of us that life is way to short. We must do what we can to stay in touch with the people we called our friends so many years ago, we may not get many chanes at that. 
I want to take this chance to send my most sincere condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Dornak, to Jeff, Tammy and their extended families, I know that Tommy will be sadly missed, it is truly a sad day in the Crosby community. Our hearts go out to you.
