Walter Charles Lund (Charles), 92, went peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with family by his side on October 3rd, 2021. He was born in Richards, Texas on April 29, 1929, and now he is enjoying a beautiful reunion with his wife Mattie Frances (Frances) and daughters Nancy and Janet, along with other beloved relatives and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Charles Lund Sr. and Mabel Lund; his wife, Frances Lund; 2 daughters, Nancy Elaine Lund and Janet Kay Lund; and two sisters, Bette Nelson and Dorothy Bailey.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Lauri Smith and grandson, Scott Smith, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force in Japan in the 1950’s for 4 years. Following his years of service he married the love of his life, Frances Bailey, and was blessed to enjoy 52 years of marriage until her death in 2006.
Charles was an instrument technician at Rohm and Haas chemical plant for 30 years until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, he taught instrumentation at Lee College for a period of time.
He served Jesus faithfully in every area of his life. He served in a variety of capacities at Cedar Bayou Baptist Church for many years, including Deacon, Finance Committee, and Church Treasurer.
He loved music, especially playing rhythm guitar and singing. Charles was handed a guitar by a buddy during his time in the Air Force and taught himself how to play. Years later he taught himself how to read music and chords and refreshed and enhanced his natural talent. He loved the old songs and could pick them out on the guitar by ear, remembering all the words. He was very involved in the Pasadena Music Club and Highlands Community Center “Pick and Grin” for many years and also played and sang at various family events. At times he was joined on vocals by his daughter, Lauri, and on guitar/vocals by nephews Robert and Randy. This pastime gave him great joy, and those he entertained loved this gift that he shared with others.
He loved gardening and there were always home grown fruits and vegetables to tend and pick and cook and can. He also loved carpentry and built much of the interior of his home in Onalaska, Texas, where he and Frances lived from his retirement in 1989 until they returned to Baytown in 1994 to be close to Houston hospitals for Frances.
For years after Frances passed away in 2006, Charles was a frequent visitor to the Double Draw Ranch in Junction, Texas, owned by nephew and niece Gene and Patti Hennigan. The ranch offers exotic deer hunting and turkey hunting, and Charles greatly enjoyed cooking for the hunters, who lovingly referred to him as “Uncle Charley” and benefitted greatly from yet another of his many talents.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home on Friday, October 8, 2021 for visitation at 10:00am followed by the funeral service at 11:00am. The funeral will be officiated by Dr. E. Richard Steel. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery at 12:30pm. Pallbearers will be Charles’ nephews.
Special thanks to Traditions Home Hospice services, especially nurses Lisa and Melissa. Also, heartfelt gratitude to Halo Staffing Crisis Care nurse Regina who lovingly helped make his last hours on earth peaceful and restful.
