Lupe grew up in a large family of 12 Siblings and they enjoyed growing up in Southern California in the San Fernando Valley. Lupe and her family were active St. Ferdinand Catholic Church. It was at a church festival at Santa Rosa Catholic Church that she met the love of her life, Fortino Gonzalez. It didn’t take Fortino long to make a marriage proposal and they were soon married.
Lupe and Fortino started their family and raised three children, Rose Mary, Robert and Michael. Lupe was a strong provider to her family. Besides the cooking and regular household chores associated with raising her children, Lupe was a proud parent. She knew how to nourish their minds as well as their bodies. One of the family’s favorite memories was to see their mother in the kitchen every day making handmade tortillas for the family.
“Ganga” was a loving nickname given to Lupe when one of her grandchildren (John) couldn’t say grandmother. Mom had a couple of other nicknames, LuLu and Lupe big. Spending time with the grandkids was a highlight for Lupe. She adored her family and helped each one as she could to make their start life. When Lupe wasn’t making tortillas, or caring for everyone else, she enjoyed crocheting blankets and doll clothes for her doll collection. After Fortino passed away in 1987, Lupe’s health declined and she began to need some help and care. In 2002, Lupe was placed with an Adult Foster Care Home in Yamhill, Oregon. It was there that she received daily care and love by the owner Elva and Andy. Lupe’s family is so thankful for the dedication and special care that Elva and Andy provided.
Lupe is survived by her three children Rose Mary (Robert), Robert (Lupe) and Michael (Sara); 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren, 4 great great-nieces and nephews; and extended family.
Services will be held in Mission Hills, California, at Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary with final interment at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
