Virginia Ruth McIntyre (Mertens) passed away peacefully on February 23 at the age of 88. She was born on August 15, 1937, in Falfurrias, Texas. As a young girl, Virginia moved with her family to Eugene, Oregon, where she would spend much of her life.
It was in Eugene that Virginia met the love of her life, Lee McIntyre. The two married in 1956 and built a life together filled with family, friendship, and community. They remained in Eugene for many years, raising their children and creating a welcoming home until Lee’s passing in 2017.
Virginia devoted her life to caring for and supporting her family. She is lovingly remembered by her 3 children and 5 grandchildren.
Family was always at the center of Virginia’s life. She enjoyed antiquing, gardening, reading, sewing, trying new crafting ideas, and cross-stitch. Anyone who ever attended a McIntyre or Mertens family gathering knows that Virginia loved to cook and feed everyone until no one left hungry—often sending guests home with days’ worth of food.
Virginia and Lee shared many simple joys together, from trips to the Oregon coast to drives throughout the Willamette Valley in search of a favorite nursery or a good sandwich from a hidden local spot. They hosted and attended many lively Pinochle gatherings with friends and family. Virginia also loved attending her children’s concerts and activities, as well as the plays, concerts, graduations, and events of her grandchildren.
Following Lee’s passing, Virginia spent time living in Central Oregon while facing some health challenges before eventually settling in the Portland metro area.
Virginia will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and the love she poured into her family and friends. Her home, her table, and her heart were always open to those she loved.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Virginia’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on April 18, 2026, at Pegg, Paxson & Springer Funeral Chapel, 4675 SW Watson Ave, Beaverton, Oregon 97005.
