

Sr. Emily Emmert, OSB (formerly Norma), 93, died peacefully on January 19, 2018 at St. Paul Hermitage where she was a resident. Sr. Emily was born on October 19, 1924 in Haubstadt, Indiana to the late Peter and Elnora Emmert. She graduated from Academy Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education Administration from St. Benedict College, Ferdinand, Indiana; a Master’s Degree from the University of Notre Dame in Education Administration; a Master’s Degree in English from Ball State University and Indiana University South. Sr. Emily began her long career in education in Huntington, Indiana and several schools in the Diocese of Evansville and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. She also taught at the Latin School, Roncalli High School, was the Dean of Girls at Bishop Chatard High School and Principal at Our Lady of Grace Academy. Sr. Emily entered Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana in 1942, made her first profession in 1944 and her Perpetual Monastic Profession in 1947. She was a founding member of Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove where she celebrated her 60th Jubilee in 2004.
Sr. Emily was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Paul, John, Roger and Bernard Emmert; sisters, Mary Rose Hunter, Sr. Mercedes Emmert, OSB, and Ruth Rietman. She is survived by her Benedictine Community, her brother, Robert Emmert of Ferdinand, Indiana and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at St. Paul Hermitage on Tuesday, January 23rd from 2:00 PM until
4:00 PM and then at Our Lady of Grace Monastery from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A wake service will be at 7:00 PM in the Monastery Chapel. Visitation will also be Wednesday from 2 – 4 pm at Our Lady of Grace Monastery. Her funeral Mass will be at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, January 24th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Retired Sister’s Fund, c/o Sisters of St. Benedict, 1402 Southern Avenue, Beech Grove, Indiana 46107 or online at www.benedictine.com.
