Genevieve Whiteside passed away Friday May 6, five days before her 100th birthday. She was born on May 11, 1922 in South Bend Indiana, the second daughter of Nellie Helms and William Keim. In 1943 she enlisted in the Army Air Corp, serving in the Air Transport Command as photographer at Memphis, Tennessee, then later at Fort Totten in New York. After separating from the Air Force in 1947, she went to work at RCA where she met Charles Whiteside. They married in 1950 and soon had a baby boy, Stephen. She supported her son in Little League by helping to build the concession stand and dug-outs, and by serving as a scorekeeper. She volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Boy Scout merit badge counselor for Pets, First Aid for Animals and Astronomy. She worked as a photographer for Tower Studios, and also enjoyed raising, breeding and showing Airedales and Great Danes, winning several ribbons and awards. After her husband died in 1984, she opened her home in Franklin Township to her cousin and his family while they relocated and changed vocations. They later reciprocated after Genevieve suffered financial losses in 2000 and 2008. As a World War II veteran, Genevieve participated in an Honor Flight to our nation’s memorials in Washington, DC in September 2013. Jeanne Haywood served as her Guardian. As her health declined, she entered the VA Foster Care program, and spent her last few years under the loving care of Shirley Collins, with assistance from the team at Kindred at Home hospice services.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Ada Crago, and her husband Charles.
She is survived by her son Stephen and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
