Marie Cecilia Reed Hodson, 93, passed into God's hands on December 15, 2010. She was blessed with a long, active life, giving her small but mighty family all the love, support and encouragement any woman could give.
Marie was born November, 5, 1917, in Indianapolis to Jason and Mary Reed. She attended Holy Cross Grade School and St. John's Academy , leaving school in the 10th grade to help support her family. Marie married Russell Hodson at the young age of 17. She was a homemaker for many years, and eventually went to work at Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance from which she retired after a career of 30 years. She also worked as a coat check girl while her husband, Russell, managed the entire ballroom staff. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church for more than 50 years and a member of the Altar Society.
To know Marie was to love her. She devoted her life to her faith, family, her friends and to caring for her beloved husband, Russell. She was kind beyond words, young at heart, possessed a quick mind and a quick wit, had a beautiful, youthful face and was always willing to tell a funny story or two. She and Russell were frequent customers of Sister's Cafe on the south side, eating there every night for supper for many years. She will be missed by many and cherished always.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2005, her son-in-law Jerry Sylvester in 2001 and her sisters Rosemary, age 2, and Catherine, age 5, in the 1920s.
She is survived by two daughters: Rosalind "Rosie" Sylvester and Marilyn (John) Jarvis; four grandchildren Rosemarie (Bob) Kelly, Michael (Maribel), Ron (Kim) and Joe (Shelly) Jarvis; nine great-grandchildren Allison, Steven, Mary, John, CJ, Glynn, Makayla, Kenny and Catherine; and three great-great grandchildren Jade, Steven Christopher and Brooke.
Visitation will be held at Little and Sons Funeral Home in Beech Grove on Sunday, December 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 20, at 10 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church in Beech Grove. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to Holy Name Catholic Church.
