Marilyn “June” Wolfe, 93, Indianapolis, passed away on September 29, 2025. She was born to Ernest “Emmett” and Alice (Kozel) Wolfe on March 24, 1932 in Oaktown, Indiana. Her family moved to Indianapolis when June was a young girl. As an only child, June learned to be self sufficient, independent, and hardworking from a very young age. She graduated from Howe High School in 1950 and worked to put herself through Butler University, earning an undergraduate degree in education in 1955, followed by a master’s degree in 1959.
June began her career as a second-grade teacher in Wayne Township before accepting an exciting year-long teaching opportunity at a U.S. Military base in Germany. Here, June developed a love of travel as she spent her weekends and holidays exploring much of Europe. Upon her return to Indianapolis the following year, she landed a teaching position at Central Elementary School in Beech Grove, IN. June discovered a true passion for teaching fifth graders and spent the remainder of her career between Central and South Grove Elementary Schools.
June retired in 1997 after an impressive 42 years in education, but her retirement didn’t last long. She spent the next 20 years as a volunteer teacher to K-6th graders in Beech Grove, sharing her love of books with children, donning imaginative costumes, and bringing literary characters to life as a weekly guest reader. June adored working with children, and she spent her career making a positive impact on countless young minds. Known by her students as patient, kind, firm, and fair, Miss Wolfe will be remembered as an educator who consistently met each student where they were and made learning fun. June was named Teacher of the Year by the Beech Grove Schools Alumni Association in 2000 — a well-deserved honor for dedicating her life to the education of young people.
Outside the classroom, June enjoyed traveling with friends, listening to music, and gardening next to her beautiful patio overlooking the nearby pond. She especially enjoyed her season tickets to Beef & Boards and time spent with her Perry Seniors group.
June is survived by her second cousin, Nancy Swallow, and numerous friends who adored her. She will be remembered for her delightful personality, kind heart, jovial sense of humor, incredible fashion sense, and the one thing she was most proud of: her strong independence, even at the age of 93.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on October 5, 2025, at Little & Sons Funeral Home, located at 1301 Main Street, Beech Grove, Indiana. Visitation will begin at 12:30 pm followed by a service at 2:00 pm. We encourage everyone to wear cheerful colors as a tribute to June, her upbeat personality, and her long, happy life. June will be laid to rest privately in Washington Park East Cemetery, 10612 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, 46229.
