Mary completed her Bachelors Degree in education at Indiana Central College in 1944. She continued furthering her education with elective courses throughout her teaching career.
She devoted her life to teaching third and fourth grade students in Beech Grove Schools for nearly 40 years. She touched the lives of hundreds of students, and in many cases, the children of her earlier students, where she taught and lived in Beech Grove. She was honored as "Teacher of the Year" in 2007 by the Beech Grove Alumni Association.
Steadfast in her Christian faith and love of our Lord, Mary was a member of Beech Grove Christian Church for nearly 60 years. She taught bible studies and Sunday school to younger children while a teacher and then to senior women later in her life. She was the treasurer of the Martha Circle for many years.
Following Mary's retirement from teaching, she devoted herself to the Beech Grove Senior Center, square dancing, reading and ceramics. She loved to travel throughout the state for her favorite subject, Indiana History, and throughout the world for biblical historical knowledge. Later in life, Mary enjoyed travel throughout the Caribbean simply for the change in climate.
Serving as President for the Beech Grove Senior Center for several years, Mary was named Queen in 2007. Her 90th birthday party was held there in honor of her devotion to the Senior Center.
Her single-minded determination was a hallmark of her life, in her faith.in her teaching, and in her relationships.
