This day was a beautiful sadness. He was surrounded by so much love and the Grace of God. Al was born in Edinburg, Texas, December 6, 1953. The second oldest of five to his late parents Alfonso Sr. and Bertha Elizondo. He and his family moved to Houston, where he attended and graduated from a private Catholic school, Mount Carmel.
Al was a self-made business man and the epitome of smooth talker. Having a way with words he earned the trust of his clientele. From the young age of 12 to 18 years old, Al worked at the farmers market, on behalf of his father’s business. After graduation, Al attended San Jacinto College for 2 years to study graphic design and drafting. At the age of 22, he opened his own business, Gulf Coast Produce. After 5-6 years of growing his own business, Al decided to sell Gulf Coast Produce and switched his career path to commercial property management, known today as Elizondo Investments. Al began with 1 property and with his years of experience and business savvy quickly grew it into 3. The next few years would bring the sale of two of those properties, but as near and dear to his heart as the Airline location was, he chose to keep her in his possession as he often referred to it as his “mother” property.
Al lived through many eras, styles, and fashion trends. In 1977, Al began his disco era where he was known to be sliding around the dance floor. Al had a passion for dancing and if there was a dance floor around, Al was on it. Al loved and appreciated the finer things in life such as luxury cars and every color suit you could imagine. In 1980, Al discovered his signature style, Urban Cowboy. His taste in music, attire, and choice of vehicle changed all from watching Saturday Night Fever and Urban Cowboy starring his idol, John Travolta.
His love of country music brought Al to the dancehall, San Antone Rose in 1985 where he met the love of his life, Geneva. In 1991, they married and he became a family-oriented man. The two purchased their first house together where they shared their lives for almost 30 years. Elizondo Investments allowed Al the financial freedom of being able to spend time with his wife and focus on raising his 4 children; Chris, Alexis, Sabrina, and George. Al was an involved father and a proud one at that. He attended all his children’s sports events, every father daughter dance, and all Boy Scouts trips. Spending time at home with his family, watching his children grow, and traveling with his wife brought him so much joy.
You could often find Al spending quality time with his younger brother Rudy and late brother George fishing. He later shared that love of fishing with his two sons, Chris and George. Al enjoyed hunting with his various cousins, family, and friends. He loved camping with his son, George, and his Boy Scout family. Although Al loved being outdoors, Al was also a house plant. He enjoyed watching Law and Order SVU, old western movies, and cheering on his favorite sports team, the Astros.
Al loved his wife, Geneva. Spending almost 40 years of their lives together, an accomplishment that most do not have the privilege of experiencing. They worked together, every day to honor, love and support each other through whatever life brought their way. Building a future and life that anyone would look back on and be proud to say was theirs. Al was an early riser and would bring a cup of coffee to his love in bed every morning. He was known for his sweet tooth, but he had an even bigger one for his wife. They loved spending time at home together, sitting on their patio, watching the Astros, and enjoying the simple pleasures in life. He and Geneva loved going out dancing and it’s been said that they two-stepped their way through their lives together. They would often enjoy vacationing and exploring everything life had to offer.
Al was best known for his sense of humor, taking pleasure in making others laugh and always being playfully silly. He was a charming man to say the least and had charisma that people would find hard to resist. He showed his love in many ways and to so many people. Al lived a life full of love, hard work, and dedication to his family.
Alfonso Elizondo Jr, is preceded in death by his parents Alfonso Sr. and Bertha Elizondo; brother George Elizondo. Al is survived by his beloved wife, Geneva Elizondo; children, Chris Cantu (wife) Becca Cantu, Alexis Elizondo, Sabrina Elizondo and George Elizondo; grandchild Landon Jordan (son of Alexis Elizondo); siblings, Rudy Elizondo, Irasema Fowler and Rose Marie Benavidez.
