Edward ‘Ted’ Aitken-Davies was born on March 3, 1948, in Devon, England. He was the much-loved eldest child of Edward Aitken-Davies, an educationalist, and his wife, Gisela Aitken-Davies, and brother to Richard, Philip, Gisela, Christopher and Nicola.
Ted grew up in Yorkshire, in the North of England, and enjoyed a happy family life, singing in the church choir, playing school basketball and taking part in school drama productions. After school he joined the Royal Navy and successfully completed officer training which took him to a variety of destinations, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malta and Perth, Gibraltar and Istanbul. It was in the navy that Ted took his sailing to competitive levels participating in races across the English Channel to France and Guernsey.
In 1969, Ted joined the Hong Kong police and rose through the ranks to become a Chief Inspector. Whilst many others found the rigours of the drill training challenging, Ted's wry sense of humour and naval training enabled him to see it through with relative ease, earning him the nickname of ‘Laughing Boy.’
Initially Ted worked with the Marine division, before moving on to Homicide. He cheerfully took on all aspects of work allocated, always prepared to go the extra mile, despite some of the distressing and politically sensitive situations he had to deal with. Ted was well respected by his colleagues in Hong Kong, and despite his self- deprecatory comments about the level of his spoken Cantonese, he built up very good relationships with the local people for whom he had a great deal of respect.
Ted married Dana in 1986 and was delighted to adopt Karen, whose marriage to Frank and arrival of grandson Kaeden were the source of great pleasure to him.
Ted retired from the Hong Kong Police in 2003, after serving for 34 years, and moved to Houston with Dana, in 2003. There he enjoyed a relaxed life with Dana and her family, travelling, fine dining, and casting his constructively critical eye over political, economic, and social developments around the globe.
