Gloria Jean Richard

Gloria Jean Cheeves-Richard, affectionately known as “Glo” was born into this life on a Wednesday, January 19, 1955 in Houston, Texas. She was the eldest daughter of seven children to the proud and loving parents Wilbert Cheeves, Sr. and Alver Jean Randolph- Cheeves. She was blessed to be raised in a home fostered in love with both parents. At an early age, she and her siblings attended St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Gloria received her formal education from local schools in Houston and attended M.C. Williams Sr High School where she was a member of the school’s marching band She later went on to attend the American Business Institute.

She found joy during her employment tenure taking on various roles where her passion led the way in areas of service. Her delightful spirit and giving heart afforded her the opportunity to gain employment in some of Houston’s top hotel hospitality services, hospitals, and nursing facilities at the start of her career. She found an absolute passion engaging children when she accepted a role within the Harris County Youth & Family Services division. She often volunteered with the Sickle Cell Association of Houston assisting with outreach and office organization efforts. Gloria possessed such a loving and affectious spirit, children were always drawn to her. It was her vibrant and magnetic personality that would draw anyone in; almost as if she’d never met a stranger.

Gloria loved spending quality time with family and friends often re-capping her favorite shows and television programs with different individuals weekly via telephone. She was an avid movie watcher where her favorite genres were Horrors and Thrillers. One of her favorite characters was Tyler Perry as Madea. I think our fondest memory of her will always be coming over to watch movies with her (that you have yet to see) only to have her narrate the entire movie explaining what will happen next. -LOL She also enjoyed traveling the country and had a love for home decor and design. She once cultivated a beautiful garden and loved to cook.

She was known as the “cool” and laid-back sister, aunt, niece, and friend that loved to laugh and was often everyone’s listening ear. What was loved most about her character and personality was that she’d tell it like it was; yet you never felt judged or criticized. She held many private and personal moments closely and will always be a well-regarded confidant.

As a mother, she reigned second to none and she was always her only child’s biggest cheerleader and fan! She totally spoiled her two grand-daughters, Quannecia & Kaylen as she lovingly watched them grow to become the young women they are today. She always felt that she had the best son-in-law (Kevin Prince) in the world and often rallied with him on most matters. In her eyes he was probably always right! Then came April 4, 2014, when she fell in love all over again as the family welcomed great grand-daughter (Nala aka Fancy). They’d often nestle together sharing strawberry ice cream and watching several hours of Word Party on a daily basis. Gloria was extremely proud of a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins in all of their endeavors as they charter family legacy into higher heights.

Gloria was loved so much and her laughter, sense of humor, and smile will be sorely missed. She leaves daughter Tonya Prince, Son -In-Law Kevin Prince, granddaughters Quannecia McCruse & Kaylen Prince, great granddaughter Nala Butler and six siblings Sheila Sutton, Debra Cooper, Wilbert Cheeves Jr, Barbara Ann Cheeves, Carla Lee, and Michael Cheeves. Nieces: Lucresion, Christina, LaTarya, Megan, Loren, Maybell, and McKenzie. Nephews: Andre, Lee, DeAndre, Jaylen, John, Aiden, and Bryce.
