JAMES FRANKLIN DUNN, JR. (“Jimmy”) passed away on August 4, 2010. He was born in Nashville, TN on September 19, 1923 and lived in Houston, TX since 1929. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Josephine Revere Dunn, and his children, Josephine Marie, son-in-law Anthony Kearney, James Franklin, III, daughter-in-law, Cecelia, Geraldine Sanford, Jeanne Evangeline, John Trafton, Jerome Anthony and grandson James Franklin, IV.
Jimmy graduated from Lamar High School in 1940. He attended the University of Houston from 1941 – 1943, majoring in accounting, and completed his degree and Marine Officer’s Training School at Southwestern Louisiana University in 1944. He served with the Fourth Marine Division on Iwo Jima in 1945. He was wounded in this battle and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. After WWII, Jimmy remained in the Marine Corps Reserves, and served his country during the Korean War in Camp Lejeune, NC.
Jimmy married Josephine, the love of his life, in 1948, re-settled in Houston, TX, and became a partner at Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte Touche) where he remained for over 40 years. Prior to retirement from Deloitte Touche, Jimmy was appointed to the Texas State Board of Accountancy for the period 1983 - 1989, serving as a Director for four years and as serving as Chairman for two years from 1987 – 1988.
Jimmy’s interests were many and varied. He and Josephine had a life-long interest in Irish culture, spending many vacations traveling in Ireland and the United Kingdom. His children remember well his talent for carpentry, his love of gardening and yard work, and his soft spot for stray dogs (most of whom became beloved family pets). In the last few years he developed an interest in genealogy and genealogy software, spending many hours at the Clayton Genealogical Library and regaling his wife and children with family history he had uncovered.
We mourn the loss of our best friend, our steadying influence, our best counsel, a devoted husband, a strong, loving father and a truly remarkable human being who epitomized the very best of his generation.
