Jean Wedeman Patterson, of Houston, Texas, quietly passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017. She was born to Charles Chester Wedeman and Catherine Owens Wedeman in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, on August 22, 1926.
Jean married Robert A. Patterson on December 21, 1946, in Forest City, Pennsylvania. Bob passed away October 11, 2013. They are reunited. They met during World War II when Bob was a lieutenant (junior grade) and Jean was working to support the military.
Jean was a loving mother to four children. The oldest, Robert Charles Patterson passed away January 18, 2015, and her second son, James David Patterson passed away in June of 1987. Jean is survived by her two youngest children, daughters, Ellen Patterson Henderson of Austin, Texas and Janet Patterson George of Houston, Texas.
Jean has five grandsons: Joshua McAllister Patterson, Owen Ebberts Patterson, and Taylor Ramsey Patterson; Edward James Henderson; and Ryan Christopher George. Her grandsons were a source of pride and joy.
Jean is also survived by one brother and two sisters: Laurence Wedeman, Ruth Wedeman Hruby, and Carol Wedeman Smith. Her older brother, Henry Wedeman, passed away several years ago.
Jean and Bob moved to Houston in 1960, and settled in to raise their family. Jean was very active in her children’s activities. She was an avid scouter and led Girl Scout troops for both of her daughters. Many of their friends remember her well and credit her for the positive impact she had on their lives. She also was Cub Scout Den Mother for her two sons.
Jean also loved gardening. She was a member of the Houston Garden Club and President of the Meyerland branch, Fleur de Lis, for several years. She found comfort in growing and maintaining her yard and gardens.
Jean and her husband were active with the American Field Service Club at Bellaire High School. The family hosted an exchange student from Ecuador.
Jean’s husband had a long career as a chemical engineer with Texaco in both New York City and in Houston. Jean would agree that one of the high points of his career with Texaco was the opportunity they had to work and live for two years in Milan, Italy, and Frankfurt, Germany.
In retirement, Jean and Bob enjoyed traveling. They returned to Italy and Germany several times, and they also traveled to other points in Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Northern Africa, and several other sites in North and South America.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2017, at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet St., Bellaire, TX 77401.
