John Manuel Barrera came to us on March 23, 1961 and left us on April 14, 2014 in Houston, Texas at the age of 53. John’s education began at Condit Elementary then went on to Westbury High School. He graduated from the University of St. Thomas with Bachelor of Business Administration and a Masters of Education. He further went on to the University of Sam Houston to complete his Doctrine of Education
His professional career was spent working for Houston Independent School District for 25 years. He was a faculty member of Concordia University and St. Thomas University. He was a leader of many communities as a principal of Las Americas Education Center and Wainwright Elementary. As a teacher, an administrator and professor he was passionate about education and student success. He would go the extra mile to help students perform at their best.
He use to always say “when your feeling down, do something good for someone else.” He taught us to give back to family, friends, and the community. He inspired hope, love and compassion in everything he did. His charismatic smile brightened up the room, assuring us that everything would be okay. He is survived by his mother Lupe Barrera; sister Elizabeth Barrera.
