Lillian Kathryn Mokry Magown was born on April 19, 1925 in Granger, Texas. She was the second of nine children born to George and Mary Mokry. After graduating from Granger High School in 1943, she moved to Austin, Texas to study at the Seton Hospital School of Nursing. After receiving a nursing degree she worked at the Seton Hospital Medical Center. In 1947 the American Red Cross responded to the Texas City Monsanto explosion and they sent her to Galveston to care for the injured and burned patients. In 1948 she returned to Galveston with the Red Cross to care for patients stricken with polio during the epidemic. After returning to Austin, she met her future husband Dan. They fell in love, were married in 1950 and moved to Houston.
Her nursing career spanned almost 40 years with 33 of those at Methodist Hospital where she worked as a staff nurse, head nurse, supervisor, and manager of the main operating rooms. In 1986 she was honored as Woman of the Year by the Federation of Houston Professional Women representing AORN. She retired from Methodist Hospital in 1990 but remained an active member of several organizations, such as: Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN); Council of Catholic Women and the Serra Club of Southwest Houston. She enjoyed her retirement through traveling, volunteering and gardening.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, James Daniel “Dan” Magown. She is survived by her children Kathy Magown Dickson and husband Wayne, Michael Magown and wife Oly, and Danice Magown Boyette, her grandchildren Stephanie Dickson Kearney and husband Bill, Matthew Dickson and wife Jennifer, Kelly Boyette, Holly Boyette Massiatte and husband Jason, and James Magown, and her great-grandson Kaiden Massiatte, and numerous brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
Lil treasured her time with family. She dearly loved her children; Kathy, Michael and Danice. Her greatest moments were seeing her grandchildren grow into young adults. Stephanie, Matthew, Kelly, Holly and James were her pride and joy! She enjoyed watching them in school events, playing sports, nursing them while sick, helping with “taxi” service to events and appointments. Her great-grandson, Kaiden, was a reason to celebrate as the family expanded.
Faith was a cornerstone in her life and she relished volunteering and worshipping at Corpus Christi Catholic Church where she established wonderful friendships with church members and the priests.
To my children:
I have savored every taste from the cup of life,
And now lovingly pass it on to those left behind.
“SPANEM BOHEM”!
Lovingly,
Mother
