Loretta Mae Turner passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at her home in Bellaire on February 7, 2025. She was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, on December 3, 1933, to Edith Cacy and Herbert S. Turner. Loretta had one beloved brother, Herbert Lewis Turner, who preceded her in death, and she always carried his memory with her. She is survived by her wife, Elizabeth Prather Adam, and their children, Julie Guest Adam (Denise Horowitz), Mary Elizabeth Granger (William), George David Adam, Cathleen Prather Eclarinal (Rommel), Laurie Gowen Adam, and Blythe Elizabeth Adam. Her love for her family was boundless, and she left behind seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Loretta is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carmeleta Turner, niece Teresa Gahm (R.J), and nephews Paul Turner and Tom Turner (Sandra).
A self-made woman, Loretta put herself through college and liked to tell the story that she “scrimped and saved” by eating peanut butter sandwiches each week. Her determination paid off - she became a CPA, and her perseverance and hard work led her to be named a partner at an accounting firm. She loved her career, and her accomplishments were a testament to her continued dedication.
Loretta was a wise and compassionate soul who lived in service of others. She found joy in simple pleasures like playing bridge, walking daily, and doting on her pets, especially her cairn terrier, Sadie. Loretta felt great peace in the outdoors. Deeply devoted to her family, she was a steady presence, a patient listener, and a source of unwavering support. Loretta adored her brother and often told stories of his childhood antics. She took great pride in the care she provided for her mother and felt that this was her greatest achievement in life.
Poet Tagore’s words inspired Loretta:
I slept, And dreamt that life was all joy
I awoke, And saw that life was but service.
I served, And understood that service was
Joy
Later, as her needs grew, Loretta was blessed with the compassionate care of Maria Aguiler, Laurie Adam, and Nancy Kahn. They gave her the love and comfort she deserved, and the family is profoundly grateful for their kindness and dedication.
Loretta’s life will be honored with a celebration on Sunday, February 23, at 1:00 PM at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet. Our Loretta Mae’s legacy of love, wisdom, and quiet generosity will live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know her. As a dear friend said, “Lessons and guidance don’t pass away. Her spirit is large and embedded in so many who love her.”
