Our little blue-eyed mother passed away peacefully on 11 July 2022 in Houston, Texas at the age of 91. She was the second daughter of Donald Call Hutchison and Lucille Marie Schultz, born on 14 October 1930 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was a proud member of a close-knit and prominent family, and was named for her great grandmother, Nancy Call Hutchison. She had an idyllic childhood in Algona, Iowa, a town founded by her great grandfather Ambrose Call. Her paternal grandfather, Archibald Hutchison, emigrated to America from Ireland in 1880 and married Edith Call Hutchison. Her maternal grandparents were Francis Xavier Schultz and Hanora Murphy Schultz. Her favorite childhood memories were visiting her aunts, uncles, and many cousins in Des Moines and snow sledding with her family. She graduated from St. Mary’s College of Notre Dame as did her grandmother Edith, with a degree in Sociology. After graduation, she moved to Tucson, Arizona to help care for her sister Joanne, and worked as a social worker and teacher. She truly loved staying in contact with her St Mary’s family and attended several reunions. She met Norman Lowell Newton on a double blind date in Tucson and they were married in 1957. His career with Shell Oil took them to California, Kansas, Oregon, Alabama, and finally Houston, where she was a proud stay at home mom to three children. Her Catholic faith was very important to her and she was an active and devoted member of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church. She taught English as a Second Language courses after her children were grown. She and Norman enjoyed many wonderful trips to visit family and friends to all 50 states in their RV after his retirement. She remained mentally sharp to the end and was an avid reader, letter writer, piano player, bridge and Scrabble player. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, sister, and husband. She is survived by her children, Michael, Ann, and Kathryn, grandson Cameron, his wife Ashley, great grandson William, extended family and many dear friends. Burial will be at River View Cemetery in Algona, Iowa at a later date, to be announced.
