Ola Heard Zachry Moore

OLA HEARD ZACHRY MOORE, 92, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2016. She was born in Galveston, Texas on August 25, 1924, to Ola Heard and John Henry Zachry. After graduating from St. Mary’s Hall in San Antonio, Texas, Ola earned a Bachelor’s degree in Latin Archeology from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York in 1945.

On May 29, 1948, Ola married Capt. Kenneth Mason Moore, Jr. in San Antonio and they began a life together that lasted over sixty-two years. In 1962, Ola joined the staff at the Fondren Library, Rice University and her employment continued for over thirty years before she retired in the summer of 1993.

Ola enjoyed many interests and was especially passionate about her journey with photography that culminated in a solo gallery exhibition. She served several years as the President of the River Oaks Garden Club and as a Board member for the St. Mark’s Episcopal School. She spent many years auditing various classes at Rice University’s Continuing Studies. Ola also enjoyed extensive travel, particularly in Europe.

Survivors include her daughter, Wendy Heard Moore Bragg and husband Byrl and their daughters, Marissa, Shannon, and Tamara; son, Kenneth Mason Moore, III and wife, Terri and their sons, James, Brian and wife, Katie and children, Mason and Emmie, and Michael and wife, Roxie and their children, Zachry, Katen, and Logan.

Ola was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who touched the lives of so many family and friends and she will be very dearly missed. We are comforted by the memories of the love we have shared. A celebration of her life will take place Friday, December 23, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 3816 Bellaire Boulevard, Houston, Texas, 77025. A reception will follow in Hauser Hall. The Rev. Mary Ann Huston and The Rev. Murray R. Powell will officiate.
