

Rose Langham Childs was born on January 26, 1943, in Galveston, Texas to the late Charles and Margaret Langham. She was the eldest of their children and the proud sister of Dr. Charles G. Langham III.
Rose was a lifelong member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Rose attended Central High School in Galveston, where she met the love of her life, Bennie T. Childs Jr., her devoted husband of 33 years. Rose earned a Bachelor of Science degree at The University of Texas at Austin, and a Master’s in Social Work at Texas Southern University.
Rose pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at the University of Texas at Austin, The Epsilon Beta Chapter and was a charter member of the Galveston, Texas Alumnae Chapter founded May 17, 1969. Rose dedicated 43 years serving the community through her dedicated work with The Harris Center, formerly the MHMRA, retiring as Deputy Director of MHMRA.
She was known for her compassion, leadership, and tireless advocacy, touching countless lives as a mentor, confidant, and friend. Her passions included reading fiction and non-fiction novels, playing Scrabble and other spelling games, sewing, music (piano and violin), cooking, entertaining, traveling and humorously “playing the dozens” with those she loved.
Rose precedes in death her beloved brother, Dr. Charles G. Langham III, his wife Anitra B. Langham, and her cherished sons, Bennie Childs III and Brandon Childs, as well as her adopted daughter Stephanie Taylor Thomas. She leaves a beautiful legacy and strength through her grandchildren: Braxton, Brayden, Blake, Courtney, Dylan, Amber, Lacey, and Derrick Childs; her great-grandchildren: Zuri and Norie Childs; and a host of nieces, nephews, and play daughters, all of whom she loved dearly. Rose will be remembered for her strength, grace, and the warmth she extended to all.
