

Sister Corona Farrell, CCVI, a Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word, has been called by God from this earthly life to enjoy God’s presence forever. Sister’s death occurred on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at St. Anne Convent, Houston, TX.
In 1921, Sister Corona was born Annie Clare Farrell, daughter of Bernard Farrell and Margaret Corrigan Farrell in Dublin, Co. Dublin, Ireland. She entered the Congregation at St. Michael’s Convent, Carrigoran, Co. Clare, Ireland on September 27, 1938, and continued her formation to become a religious Sister at the Villa de Matel on May 2, 1939. Sister Corona made her First Profession of vows on June 6, 1942 and made her Perpetual Profession of vows on June 6, 1947.
Between the years of 1944-1981, Sister Corona expressed her deep love for God and witnessed being a “gospel of love” to others, especially through the ministries of care of children, education, and as a principal in different Catholic schools. In Texas, she served at St. Mary Orphanage, Galveston; St. Francis of Assisi School, Houston; and Our Lady of Fatima School, Texas City. During her different assignments in Louisiana, she served at St. Joseph Home, Pineville; St. Mary’s Home, Lafayette; and St. Frances Cabrini School, Alexandria. She served also in Utah at St. Ann Orphanage, Salt Lake City and St. Ann School, Salt Lake City. Sister received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, TX in 1953, and her Master of Arts degree in education from Immaculate Heart College, Los Angeles, CA in 1966. An outstanding educator and educational leader, Sr. Corona was also a great historian and an avid reader. Between the years 1982-1994, she served at Villa de Matel as Assistant General Superior and General Secretary for the Congregation. After a well deserved sabbatical at St. Francis Convent, Tulsa, she continued in ministry as the Information and Hospitality Assistant at Schumpert Medical Center, Shreveport, LA. In 2006, she transitioned from active ministry to a ministry of prayer at Villa de Matel Center, Houston, Texas.
Sister Corona’s immediate family has preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frances Farrell, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
A special thank you is extended to the staff of St. Anne Convent for the compassionate care they gave to Sr. Corona during her later years. Sister Corona’s body will be received at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa de Matel, 6510 Lawndale St., Houston, TX at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, followed by Evening Praise and a celebration of her life. Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa de Matel on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. The Rite of Committal will follow at Villa de Matel Cemetery.
