

Alvin C. Funk, 86, of Darmstadt, IL, formerly of Fayetteville, IL and Belleville, IL, passed away on July 7, 2023 at Coulterville Care Center. Al was born and raised on a farm in Fayetteville Township on October 12, 1936. He acquired a strong work ethic at an early age, which he kept his entire life. After leaving the farm in 1957, he earned his CDL and drove a fuel tanker truck and delivered fuel products to various gas stations, fuel depots, and airports for 48 years, until his retirement in 2009. Al and his wife, Jeanette, co-owned and operated their own fuel hauling business the last 30 years of his career.
In his younger years, he enjoyed going to the club house at Carlyle Lake and entertaining friends and relatives with a fish fry or BBQ. Yearly trips to Branson were also special to him and a well-manicured lawn was a must. Al also had a passion for Mack trucks.
Al was a current member of Holy Ghost UCC in Darmstadt, IL. He was a former long-time member of Hope Church in Belleville, IL where he served as a term as President of the Church Council and on other church committees. Al was also a member of Freeburg Masonic Lodge and the Ainad Shriners. He was also a past member of Midwest Truckers Association.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Otto J. and Alvina, nee Roth, Funk, two brothers, Verlan “Buddy” Funk and Leland “Lee” Funk, two sisters, Arlene (Warren) Koch and Bernice (Orville) Kinzel, and a nephew, Dale Kinzel.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Jeanette, nee Steinheimer, Funk, whom he married on May 4, 1957 in Darmstadt, IL; his children, Bradley Funk of Darmstadt, IL, Cindy Funk of Freeburg, IL, and Todd (Georgina) Funk of Dallas, GA; four grandchildren, Nichole (Chad) Kunz, Derek Wilke, Taylor and Kaylee Funk; two step-grandchildren, Michael Rayburn and Emily (Andrew) Bolyn; three great-grandchildren, Hunter, Charli, and Katelyn Kunz; three step-great-grandchildren, Cale, Kyli, and Bren Bolyn; a brother, Dallas (Sue) Funk, a sister-in-law, Virginia Funk, and a brother-in-law, Stanley Steinheimer; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, plus three godsons, Gene Koch, Patrick Leonhardt, and Randy Miller.
In celebration of Alvin’s life, visitation will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Holy Ghost UCC in Darmstadt, IL, with a memorial service to immediately follow. Inurnment will take place at Darmstadt Memorial Cemetery. The funeral home is not involved with Al's service; all flowers should be delivered to the church and memorials given directly to the family.
