I joined Microsoft in 2012 and worked with Alex in various capacities for almost the entirety of my time at the company. I always found him to be an excellent colleague and mentor, and over time I grew to consider him a friend as well. He encouraged us all to hold ourselves to a high standard, and exemplified such standards himself with his deep knowledge and expertise. But even more importantly, he was always cheerful and friendly, and eager to provide help and guidance, or just to chat about the tech news or hockey. And even as he fought this horrible disease, he was unwaveringly courageous and optimistic. The loss we all feel is immense, and nothing will be able to replace Alex's presence in our lives, but I will always remember him, his bright spirit and strength of character, and all that I learned from working with him.

Hi--

My name is Rob Young.  I am a Software Architect at Microsoft on the Surface Team.  I learned about Alex's passing this morning and I wanted to share my condolences and share a little bit from my perspective.  I had been aware of Alex's condition for a long time.

I met Alex many years ago when we started the Surface computer project.  Alex helped us get security services running in our factories.  As time went on we collaborated on many security projects.  I personally learned a lot from his expertise.  Alex posses wonderful communication skills, is transparent (no hidden agendas), very intelligent, is really cordial and easy to work with, and was always doing really great things for Microsoft and our customers.  I am fortunate to work with very intelligent/gifted people both inside Microsoft, and outside corporations as well.  Everyone I have talked to that worked with Alex tells the same story.  Anyway, I wanted Alex's family to know how much he meant to myself , Microsoft and our partners.   He will be greatly missed.

November 10th 1997. I remember this date still now and probably never going to forget. I was invited to a birthday party on which I’ve met Alex.  Shura, I’ve started to call him since then. He looked “fresh” ))) just came from Tomsk, Russia. I was right, few month or even week maybe, before this day. This was my second year in the country, I had some friends at that time a lot of them we are friends still. Shura fit right in and became a vocal guy a leader I would say another words! It was fun happy teenage years we spent together!!! 
 When he left to Seattle, it felt like a soul has left the team. At least that’s how it was to me. We all adjusted our own way. A lot of as has left New York few fallowed Shura and live in Seattle. Some still in New York…
 It’s devastating what happened it is hard sad and sorry for as all the day when Alex has left us! 
 I feel honored and thankful been his friend having him as mine, that fact that he was a part in my life means a lot to me. I will always remember you my friend! Thanks to you I’ve found new friends when was visiting Seattle few times and they have been coming to visit New York. May you rest in peace on earth and eternal paradise in heaven!

I had the privilege of knowing Alex and working with him for few years. He will truly be missed and will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

I have an incredible memory of Sasha’s smile when I last saw him about 3 weeks prior to

I met Alex in college. He was the smartest student, so I always enlisted his help on challenging projects and tests. We eventually became friends when he realized he couldn’t get rid of me, lol. Alex loves adventure and lived life to the fullest. Even through the challenges, he didn’t complain and was always hopeful. Alex is strong and courageous. I enjoyed our discussions around life and faith. I always gained a new perspective when we hung out. I will dearly miss you friend, and I look forward to seeing you in heaven.
