He is survived by his loving wife, Anne; their four children, Christine (Richard) Harris, Heather (Miguel) Ortega, Daryl (Kelly) Affleck and Rob (Brandy) Affleck. He is also survived by grandchildren Nicole (Josh) MacAdam & Nolan (Amanda) Harris, Evan Ortega & Martina (Caleb) Daly, Charlie & Clara Affleck, and Annika & Hannah Affleck, and three great grandchildren.
Allan is also survived by brothers John (Jane) and Bruce (Cecily), as well as many nieces and nephews and several special godchildren.
Allan was born in Mission, British Columbia to Cay (Lyster) and Norman Affleck. He spent his formative school years in Salmon Arm, BC, graduating from High School in 1957, then attending the University of British Columbia for two years, followed by two years at the University of Manitoba, where he studied actuarial science.
In 1959 he married Anne Kersey. Anne & Allan met during their senior year in High School and for more than 67 years Anne has been a huge support to Allan in whatever activity he was undertaking. After living in Vancouver and Winnipeg, where their daughters were born, they moved to Mercer Island in 1970.
Allan was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. One of his great honors was to be elected President of that organization in 1989, after having served on its Board of Governors for five years. Most of his working life was spent with Milliman, Inc., a large international consulting firm. He served on Milliman's Board of Directors and was National Director of the firm's life insurance practice for several years.
In 1990 Anne and Allan moved to Tokyo to open the firm's first office in Asia. They lived in Japan for eight years. While there, Allan helped open additional offices for the firm in Korea and Hong Kong.
Allan has been a lifelong member of the Anglican/Episcopal church and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church for the past 56 years. From his early years, his belief in and commitment to God played an important role in his family, business and daily life. He and Anne have been active in their church wherever they have lived or vacationed. He was proud to have served as senior warden of the parish vestries in four countries-Canada, United States, Japan and Mexico. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Episcopal seminary, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, in Berkeley, California.
Family has always been an important part of Allan's life. He and Anne organized several extended family reunions, as well as gatherings of their own family. Having all their family members together at the same time has always been a blessing. Trips with children and grandchildren were at the top of Allan's favorite things to do. Teaching them boating safety, waterskiing and tubing was another fun activity for him.
A Memorial Service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church (4400 86th Ave SE, Mercer Island) on Sat. June 6 at 2:00 pm.
Memorial donations may be made in Allan's name to Emmanuel's Endowment Fund or to the charity of your choice.
