De-Yu was born in Hubei Province, China and grew up in Taipei, Taiwan. He attended National Taiwan University, where he majored in History. While in college, he met and after a nine year courtship, married the love of his life, Shirley “Lo-Hwa” Sun. Together, they had two children, Steven and Jean.
In 1970, De-Yu and Shirley made the decision to immigrate to the United States to give their future generations more opportunities. De-Yu arrived first and brought Shirley and their two children two years later. De-Yu went back to school and began work as a system analyst. He worked at various banks where he helped develop one of the first ATMs in the Seattle area. He eventually retired in 2002 from Boeing.
During these years, De-Yu and Shirley raised their two children in Bellevue, WA. Family was most important to him. He enjoyed taking his family skiing, travelling, and especially supporting them in all their activities. He even returned to school for an MBA while still working because he wanted to set a standard for his children. De-Yu was also very active in the community, holding many leadership positions including Commissioner Overseas for the Overseas Community Affairs Council-Republic of China, President of the Taiwan Benevolent Association of America, Senior Counselor of the World Taiwan Benevolent Association, and Chair of the Rong Rong Community Choir.
In 2004, Shirley passed away. Despite his deep sorrow, De-Yu continued to remain active. He helped with and attended his grandchildren’s many activities, travelled and took cruises with family, and regularly played golf with his good friends until his health made it difficult. He loved to read and frequently visited local libraries. He enjoyed visiting his vacation condo near Mt. Baker, and he would visit all the libraries in each of the small towns along the way. The librarians there knew him by name! He is survived by his two children, Steven K. Lang (Michelle) and Jean ML Lee (Dennis), four grandchildren, Rachael, Madeleine, Garrett, and Skyler, and five siblings, Wen Chen, Lang-Li Chu, De-En Lang, De-Lung Lang, and Jan Kish.
