Earl was born on June 11, 1926 in Kokomo, Indiana to Earl Dean "Cal" and Mary Calvin, and grew up in Peru, Indiana with his 4 siblings. He graduated from Peru High School in 1944.
Earl served his country in the Navy at the end of WW2 before returning to civilian life and pursuing an engineering degree at Purdue University, where he graduated with honors, on June 10, 1951.
Earl met his future wife, Willma, the love of his life, on a blind date in October 1948. They were married on June 25, 1949 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in New Castle, Indiana. At the time, he was a manager of the university's basketball team because he was "too small to play."
As they were beginning to build their beautiful family, Earl became an engineer with Boeing. Through this, Earl worked with NASA behind the scenes on the Apollo lunar missions, and stayed on with Boeing until his retirement in 1990.
Earl was generous in his compassion and support for those in need, and a loving foster parent to several children. He and his wife were actively involved in all of their children's activities.
As a devout Catholic, he was a steadfast pillar of faith and a guiding compass for his family and community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Earl was well known for his love of family, faith, basketball, golf, and Wheel of Fortune.
He was preceded in death by Willma, his loving wife of 68 1/2 years; his parents; two brothers Malcolm and Richard; sister Mary Lou Guy; two sons-in-law, Richard Stapp and Freddie Reed; and grandchildren Misty and Megan.
