Dear Matt’s Family,

I was a colleague of Matt’s at the lab. He was truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

When I first joined the lab, I was new not only to the team but also to the country. As a foreigner and a newcomer, it was easy to feel out of place—but Matt made sure I didn’t. He always took the time to talk to me, patiently slowing down his speech so I could better understand unfamiliar words. His kindness and willingness to connect meant a great deal to me.

Matt also showed how much he cared about people. I remember one time we were all heading to a lab party, but he noticed one of our colleagues was still working. Without hesitation, Matt stayed with her—even though it meant missing most of the party.

That’s just one example. Matt constantly showed what it means to be a truly good human being. He treated everyone with care, generosity, and a genuine desire to help. His presence made the world better for all of us who were lucky enough to know him.

We will always love him, and we will always miss him.

Matt was a great teammate and an even better friend. I have fond memories of him both on the baseball field and in passing on campus at Overlake. He cared deeply—not just about his own performance, but more importantly, about the outcome of each game for his team. His passion held all of us accountable and made those around him better. Dear Matt's family,

 I am so sorry for your loss. Matt joined the lab during the pandemic  of 2020 as an undergrad. To me, he is one of the sweetest and kind human being that I have ever met. Every time he came to the lab, he always asked me" Bao, Do you need my help with anything today?" His eagerness to help warmed up the lab environment. He always brought gifts and snacks for everyone after coming back from a trip and never forgets to leave a sweet note at my desk. 
Matt was very mature  for his age, which impressed me. One time, we had a lab gathering,  he was very sociable, and introduced  himself to the director. This is something that I would never dare to do at his age. 
We had shared so many good memories in and outside the lab that I could not name them all.
Matt will be forever in our memories, and will surely be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. It was always so fun seeing the both of you around the cardiology office and the cath lab. Twinsies! There are no words that can take away the pain during this time but know there is a community of people here to support you.

Dear Irene, Wayne and Kristen,
I am so sorry for your unfathomable loss. When I remember Matt, I first see the happy, smart 6th grader I met in 2014, an image that quickly changes into the young man I got to know on the Ancient Field Studies trip. My most favorite memory of that trip is a Matt memory. The boy who was most likely to ask at lunch “are you going to finish that?”, who kept everyone laughing, the Jock, one night at the Villa casually sat at the keyboard and said, “I think I can play Fur Elise”.  We all thought he was kidding so we laughed.  He played. Our jaws dropped. He played both movements, exquisitely interpreting Beethoven. His self-deprecating yet cheeky smile when he finished was perfect. I can still see the mischievous twinkle in his eye as he looked at us, his awestruck friends and teachers. That is a memory I have cherished. I am grateful I knew him. My condolences to you all.

We are heartbroken to hear of Matt’s passing. Please accept our deepest condolences.

Our son had the privilege of growing up with Matt—on the baseball field, in the dugout, and through all the years of childhood friendship. The memories that we share are a lasting part of our family’s story, and we will always remember him with warmth and affection.

There are no words that can ease your pain, but please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of profound sorrow. We hope you can find some comfort in the love that surrounds you and the memories that will never fade.

This young man demonstrated deep compassion as I spent time with him seeing patients and discussing caring for the needy patients I see internationally. He was caring beyond what I had seen in young men his age. He was unique, gentle, kind and respectful.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Matt's passing. Matt had grown up in front of us and was good friends with our son. We have fond memories of Matt from various baseball teams (Issaquah Little League, IBC, and Overlake). Matt was a very polite and quiet young man. We offer our condolences to Wayne, Irene, and their extended family and wish them much strength .
