Dear Ping, 
It’s your birthday again. We sisters send you love and think of you, as always.
You once wrote an article on Easter Island. There, you quoted a phrase by William Faulkner. It feels good to let those words sink in:
“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”  -  Indeed.

I walked in a park today, thinking about Ping and our relationship over 50 years.  It was a pleasure having him by my side. God bless you, Ping.

Dear Aunt Ming, Nina, Larry, and children,

Our deepest sympathies go out to you during this time. We continue to mourn with you during this difficult time.

Despite the great sadness and grief, we are also encouraged when reflecting upon the lasting legacy that Uncle Ping has had on our family, as well as the extended family.

For example, I (David) still remember that when I was preparing to teach English in China in 2002, Uncle Ping gave me many words of helpful wisdom in preparation for my time overseas.

Also, Julia fondly recalls upon Uncle Ping’s charm and wit during family gatherings. He was always able to entertain young and old with his jokes and humor, as well as able to provide sound advice from his experience and travels.

There are countless more examples of Uncle Ping’s love and generosity shown towards our family. May one of the best ways we show our respect to Uncle Ping be to pass along his actions of kindness and charity to future generations.

Even though I was thousands of miles away from home - he and you guys made me feel right at home, even inviting me to special events such as this anniversary. Forever thankful! I will always remember Uncle Ping’s wisdom and genuine care for others. Philipp

Dear Aunt Ming, Nina, Larry and family,

I will remember Jo-Jo's deep voice, his serious questions about my future educational plans, and his deep sense of responsibility and loving care for all generations of our family. I think back fondly on watching him joke around with Caleb, Timothy, Kira & Alexa and his delight and pride in his grandchildren. I am grateful that Jo-Jo and Aunt Ming retired in Seattle so we could spend more time with them, and I'm glad he fully embraced retirement and made the most of it - tending his garden, spending time with family in Palo Alto, and always thinking of his sisters by making weekly deliveries of Costco chicken and other treats.  

We already miss him deeply, and will strive to live up to the example he set for all of us.

I feel I did not get a chance to know Uncle Ping as well as I could.  As Jenny told me, growing up he was intimidating--always pushing the kids to do their best and work hard in school.  But the person I met was much more engaging.  Still a little intimidating, however!  Every family get together he made a point to speak with me.  Always asking about work but also on some other topic to discuss.  His intensity and focus and insight during our discussions was engaging.  But he was also fun--it was especially good to see the fun he had with the various cousins and our girls.   I still have the cognac he gave me when my parents visited so that on my father's next visit, the three of us could enjoy it again.  Uncle Ping's kindness and generosity will be missed by all those who knew him.

Ping called it "Quite Summer Sunset".

The magnificent sunset scene viewed from the balcony. Ping watched it literally every day. He regularly shared the ever-changing views with us, some dramatic, some quiet. It's hard to bear that the last image he sent us on Sept.4, 2022 will remain the last one.


After retirement, hardly a day went by without gardening in Ping's life. The lush and kind of jungle-style garden he had created was a place where he found fulfillment of its own kind. We know that from numerous poems he wrote.

Sadly, I don't have many pictures of Jo-Jo and me taken with my own camera or cell phone. But here is one from what used to be our annual family Christmas gift exchange.

Uncle Ping, or Jo-Jo, as my cousins and I called him, always had a strong leadership presence in the family. He will be sadly missed.

Before COVID-19 we used to have family dinners with up to 4 or 5 generations at the same meal. As a child or young adult, you had better reflect on your recent accomplishments and have some good answers prepared, because at dinner, Jo-Jo was likely to ask you some probing questions about your education, career, and/or life choices. He often seemed rather stern, so it was always very gratifying to sense his approval, or to be able to make him smile or laugh. To me, Uncle Ping was the wise, successful, patriarch, who offered good advice and words of wisdom, even if we didn’t always follow that advice. He is one of my role models. I look at the love and respect my extended family has for Uncle Ping, the success and accomplishments in his life, as well as the success and accomplishments of his daughter and his grandchildren, and I know that he did life right.

Aunt Ming, Nina, Larry, and kids, we are so sorry for your loss. We hope you can get through this difficult period knowing how much he was loved and respected, and how much of an impact he made and will continue to make in all of our lives.

Part 1

No words can fully express our deepest sorrow loosing our beloved brother Ping so suddenly. Somehow I have found peace as I reflect on how brilliantly he lived his life on this earth.  

He was blessed having the most gracious parents one could ask for. He enjoyed his childhood while the world was shattered by wars among the nations.

He successfully kept top scores from high school through his years at the most renowned university in Taiwan. He was admired for having multiple gifts of singing, writing, speaking, etc. 

He was awarded an American Fulbright scholarship which provided tuition to pursue a master’s degree at Columbia University, international travel expenses and the cost for room and board in the USA.  

After Ping graduated from Columbia University with honors, he entered Yale University with a scholarship to further his education.  Soon he was joyfully married to his longtime college sweetheart, Ming, beautiful, elegant, also with many talents.  A year later, they were blessed with an adorable baby girl.  They named their baby YuPing, meaning Ping Junior.

Later, a rare opportunity came to Ping. The World Bank for Reconstruction and Development selected him to receive a position of Young Professional from among a thousand candidates.  He accepted the offer. For years, served by his wisdom and dedication, Ping was always highly regarded as one of the most outstanding staff of the World Bank, and he was totally devoted to this career until he reached the age of retirement.

Part 2

Ping was the eldest child with five sisters. He sure was our parents’ delight, and the admiration of the sisters.  Dealing with all the challenges of living in a foreign country, he never stopped caring for his family in Taiwan.  I am forever grateful that Ping and Ming encouraged me to further my education in America and squeezed their tight budget to finance my first year in USA.

After our father passed away in 1974, our mother moved to America to live with my family. She was 62 years old and very much independent.  Later Ping bought her a house facing ours, across the street.  She lived there happily for 34 years. Ping always supported her generously and made efforts to visit her after his business trips. I still remember so many times our mother gratefully saying to her friends: "Having my one son is more precious than having ten sons!"

At Taiwan University, Ping heard Gospel from a western lady missionary. He accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized.  I remember vividly that he invited me to their church where he was singing with the choir.  It is this assurance that comforts me in peace: Someday, I will sing praise to God with our beloved parents and Ping in heaven! 

May God grant us peace and strength in our deep sorrow as we mourn the parting of our beloved Ping.

Our brother enjoyed taking us on an excursion or also a trip over a longer distance. He loved to treat us by insisting on taking over the bills.

Back then, Ping-Cheung preferred undemanding and independent travel resembling backpack travel. He made a few trips to China this way. I remember that he went to Tibet once. I regret I myself don' t have any pics of that trip.

Back then, my brother preferred independent and undemanding travel, resembling backpacking travel. He made a few trips to China this way. I regret that I myself don't have any pictures of his trip to Tibet. 






Dear Aunt Ming, Nina, Larry and children, our deepest condolences go out to you during this difficult time.   Although we did not have the opportunity to spend much time together, Uncle Ping’s strong values and altruistic character created a legacy that has positively influenced every generation of our extended family.  We will miss him greatly and will never forget the kindness he showed John, me and our children.  We hope the outpouring of love and support from all who knew him will bring some comfort. April/May 2017
Inspired by a trip his grandson Grant made to Iceland, my brother invited me to join him to discover this Nordic country. Great nature at every step of the journey, so unique! We really enjoyed the trip.


In Oct/Nov 2018, my brother and I joined some 20 friends for a trip leading to places in South-West China, of which many areas were inhabited by ethnic minorities like Miao and Dong People.
When we were in Dazhai County in the province of Guizhou, and totally out of blue, some friends ran into a marble tablet on a wall, with an engraved text introducing a project financed by the World Bank, called “Guizhou Natural and Cultural Heritage Protection and Development Project”. The friends shouted, Ping, come over, quick, the World Bank ….! Yes, my brother was obviously very touched reading the text! The organization he had dedicated himself to for so many years was present here, in a remote corner of China! And it wanted to do some good! At least that was what the text said. 


To the family of Ping Cheung Loh:  I first met Ping 50 years ago, when I joined the Legal Dept of the Bank in 1972. He became a mentor almost immediately.  Ping had played a signifiant role in the establishment of the Staff Association.  He soon finished that role and encouraged me to become the Legal Dept's rep at the Staff Association.  And supported me greatly when I was elected President thereof.   In the early 1990s, when I had joined a major law firm and was very unsettled, Ping took time to steer me in a direction that would result in my moving to Moscow for another major part of my life.  I was fortunate to visit Ping and Jean in the early 2000s, and to see their lovely Washington home.  I am sad that I never made another journey there.
Ping was a wise and empathetic person. He always had a long view of life and events. And his friendship remained strong and steasfast no matter the distance in time and miles. I send deep condolences to Jean and the entire family.  And pray for Ping's soul to rest in peace.

1972 --- I left the US for Germany, as a student. I felt homesick. Not long after my arrival, brother was in Europe on a working trip. He went the extra mile to come to see me. It did me a lot of good.

He was the beloved and respected head of our family.

Great-Uncle Ping charmed all the kids in the youngest generation of our family. I think becoming a grandfather brought out the playful side of him, and it was wonderful to see.

Back then, Ping-Cheung had 3 sisters.  Two more were yet to come, and then the family was complete!

Thank you for being a fantastic grandfather. I’ll cherish the memories we made together forever, miss you.

It's Ning-ling writing here. I'll always carry my deepest gratitude to my brother in my heart. His immense loving care of me had been a pillar of strength for me. For that I'm forever indebted to him. I miss him so much. I don't want to disappoint him and will stay strong. Thank you, brother!
