Robert Eugene Terry (Bob) was born to R.B. Terry and Darlene Chadwick on April 19, 1938 in Caldwell, ID, and died on April 17, 2012 as a resident of Bothell, WA. Bob launched his 41-year career with Safeway as a box boy at age 16. He attended the University of Washington and worked his way through school. The week his first daughter was born, he was made an assistant store manager. He advanced within the company and held management positions in Washington, Colorado and California.
In 1957, Bob and his brother Michael were baptized members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was fellowshipped by the Bishop’s daughter, Sandra Butler, and in 1960, Bob and Sandra were married in the LDS Idaho Falls Temple for time and all eternity. Bob enlisted as a medic in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, and as newlyweds, they spent six months in Alabama and California. This was the only time in Bob’s career when he had a 40-hour work week.
In 1966, Bob surprised Sandra with the suggestion they purchase and remodel her family home in Woodinville, WA. After a three-year remodel, the estate was listed on the Woodinville Historic Tour. While in Woodinville, their family grew to include their five children and two boys that were later adopted. Job transfers throughout his career included residences in Bothell, Tacoma, Renton and Bellevue, WA; Salt Lake City, UT; Littleton, CO; Windsor, CA; and back to Bothell, WA for retirement.
As a member of the LDS Church, Bob served in teaching and leadership positions including YM President, High Priest Group Leader, Bishop, Stake High Council Member, Singles Branch President and his most rewarding assignment -- Home Teacher. His vision and leadership over LDS Bellevue Stake youth dances in the 1980s was a passion passed on to son, Brent. Bob was involved with the community and local government, and served as a Bellevue City councilmember. In 1975, he was recipient of the Spirit of Life Award and Humanitarian of the Year for life-long dedication to human betterment and for sharing in the ideals and objectives of the City of Hope.
Throughout marriage, Hawaii was Bob and Sandra’s vacation spot. World travel in retirement took them to 69 countries with many dear friends. In 2008, they purchased a Bavarian chalet in Leavenworth, WA, a retreat for family members and Bob’s dog, Rocky.
Bob’s desk plaque reads, “Wherever You Go, Go With all Your Heart.” His creative genius, investment in growing people, and desire to drive outstanding results were realized in politics, business and service. Bob is preceded in death by granddaughter, Natasha. He is survived by his brother Michael; wife of 51 years, Sandra; their seven children and spouses Bill and Myleen Moffett, Mike, Alex and Charisse Underwood, Troy, Brent and Marsha, Clint and Taunya Covington, and Bruce and Lia Brandligt; and grandchildren Lindsay, Joshua, Jacob, Blair, Ethan, Brooke, Rane and Asher.
