The world lost an extraordinary woman, wife, mother, nana, sister, cousin, and friend on June 12, 2023. Sylvia reached the end of her battle with Cerebral Amyloidosis after a long six months of tireless determination and hope. Her life began on August 5, 1944, accompanied by her twin brother Cecil, born to Victor Lorenzo Meade and Sybina Hinks Meade in Port-Aux-Basques, Newfoundland. A short four months after Cecil’s birth, he succumbed to SIDS and Sylvia felt the loss of her twin brother throughout her life. She spent her early formative childhood years in Newfoundland with her late sister Lorraine and brother Gerald. During this time she established the core foundation of who she was - strong willed, hard working, and determined, holding close the importance of enduring family bonds. In 1953, Victor and Sybina moved the family to Toronto, Canada where sister Wendy joined the party.
Sylvia was a woman of service and a true caretaker. A loving woman to the core, she was committed to making those around her feel comfort, warmth, and assurance, graduating from St. Joseph’s nursing school in 1965 and McMaster University in 1975 where she received her certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Later in life, her passion for nursing continued, leading her to obtain her Nursing Certification with the American Nursing Association in Washington State followed by a successful 22 year career at Overlake Hospital. During her time at Overlake, Sylvia wore many hats, from lactation consultant to charge nurse, closing out her career as Overlake Women’s Clinic Supervisor. During this time, she also moonlit as a personal lactation consultant to countless friends, family, and acquaintances near and far.
Sylvia loved her family and was devoted to their well-being and success all her life. She met the love of her life, Peter, in 1974, making their dedication to one another official on October 9, 1976. Together they shared 5 children: Tim (wife Claire), Kirsten (husband Jason), Adrienne (husband Ian), Michelle (husband John), and Christopher (partner Serafina). Sylvia was incredibly proud of her children, always committed to their hobbies, education, travel, and adventure seeking lifestyles. She enjoyed spending endless amounts of time with her grandchildren: Sara Sophia (17), Owen Daniel (15), Harlan Davis (11), Eden Irene (9), Victor Lorenzo (9), Mikayla Sylvia (7), Mia Cynthia (4), and Rosalind Marion (3).
All her life, Sylvia proudly proclaimed her Newfie roots and Canadian heritage - never missing a moment to share her love for the country she was from. Sylvia has always been drawn to women’s rights issues, medical literature, international travel, hiking, reading, live music, paddle boarding, camping, and cooking. Staying in touch and maintaining close relationships with dear friends from various periods in her life was always a priority to her. She lived for summer months in Ontario’s cottage country, most recently drawing enjoyment and relaxation from her vacation home in Osoyoos, BC.
Heaven welcomed Sylvia while surrounded by her loving husband and devoted children at home in Mt. Vernon, Washington. She is preceded in death by her parents Victor and Sybina Meade, sister Lorraine Smith, and brother Cecil Meade. The family would like to thank Hospice of the Northwest for their tender care in her final days, and Home Instead in the weeks preceding. Any donations should go to Planned Parenthood - an organization Sylvia fervently supported. A viewing and funeral service, followed by a reception in honor of Sylvia Mary Wang, will be held at Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Funeral Home on June 30, 2023.
