After Dave's medical retirement in 1961 the family settled in Bellevue, WA where Winnie returned to work for the federal government. Her husband, David W. Hooker preceded her in death in 1971, making her a Gold Star wife. Winnie went on to work at the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, Veterans Administration, NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. Winnie's younger brother Brigadier General, Dean Winston Meyerson preceded her in death in 1983. Winnie retired in 1996 from the EPA and married Commander, Ralph A. Miller who passed on in 2004.
With a charming smile, you would find her out with family or friends at Happy Hour wearing polka dots and a bright yellow outfit, reciting her famous toast... "I drink to your health..." Winnie especially enjoyed her grandchildren, the theatre, POPs, gardening, reading, and politics. In 1988 she designed and built her beloved second home in Cannon Beach, Oregon. She was always ready to travel and found joy and relaxation on many adventures including to Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean, the East Coast, Alaska, the Orient and even Antarctica!
