To me Ama was not only my grandmother, but also like a mother. One of the earliest memories I have in life is with her. I remember that she was sitting in her chair and was holding me and hugging me. She would tap softly on my bum to make me fall asleep. I felt safe, warm and loved, and it is one of the best feelings I have ever felt. When I think about that feeling, I think of her.

Ama and Akong lived across the street, and most of our childhood we spent at their house. She would pick us up every day from school and make us dinner. She would make the best ayam goreng in the world, which she would share with neighbours and even my elementary teacher. She would watch her favourite television show, The Bold & the Beautiful, every day. She would talk Bahasa to us, which I can still speak some to this day. She would dress me and my friend up in Hawaiian clothes to take pictures. And once bought me a Barbie birthday cake that I found the most amazing cake ever. She took us to Paris with Chris & Michael. And cooked dishes I found different, like Papeda and beef tongue. Growing up meant growing up at Ama and Akong, and I am happy and forever grateful for that.

When she moved to the States we would call from time to time. I regret that I was not able to visit her more often and spend more time with her, but I am grateful to have seen her in 2018 with my cousins. It is a trip I will forever cherish. 

Dear Ama,

Thank you for being like a mother to me. I hope that you are resting in peace, and that one day I can give the love to my (grand)children like you gave to me.

Thank you for being an amazing grand mother! For always taking care of us when we were little. I will always remember the your amazing fried chicken and countless rice dishes.
