She was born on November 5, 1934, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to Marie Eva Heidinger Blackburn and Richard “Short” Marion Blackburn. Carole’s greatest joy in life was her family. She treasured time spent visiting with loved ones and welcoming them into her home. Carole also had a deep love of dancing and spent many joyful hours at the Solo Club and the Swing Dance Club. She was an outstanding dancer, bringing grace, energy, and enthusiasm to the dance floor.
Carole had a deep love and compassion for children. She served as a foster mother to many children over the years and later adopted two boys in her 60s. She retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service with Lucent and spent her retirement years raising her two sons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaither Howeth; her parents, Richard and Marie Blackburn; her daughters, Diane Homer and Kimberly Rider; and her sisters, Joyce Post, Anita June Ramseyer, and Jacklyn Brooks.
Carole is survived by her daughter, Shellie Been and husband Dennis; her sons, Steven Howeth and Justin Howeth; her grandchildren, Christy Crowson and husband Greg, Angela Gist, Kristen Almendariz, and Kimberly Matlock and husband Kalib; and many cherished great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her cousins, Joan Rettenger and Mary Alice Burke, with whom she remained close throughout her life; her nephew, Gary Brooks, who called her almost daily to check on her; and Kelli Thomas, who stayed in regular contact with her. Carole leaves behind many other family members and friends who will remember her with love and think of her often.
