Charles William Nettle Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud United States Air Force veteran, was born on November 4, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Charles William Nettle Sr. and Verna K. Niemesch. He was raised in Cleveland and graduated from high school in 1955 before answering the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force.
During his distinguished military career, Charles became a pilot and flew B-52 bombers while serving during the Vietnam War. He also served as a pilot aboard the KC-135 and was part of the historic first mid-air refueling of the SR-71A Blackbird. His service took him to various places around the world, including time spent in England and Spain. After many years of dedicated service, Charles retired as a Major and Commanding Officer at Tinker Air Force Base. He moved to Oklahoma City in 1976 and officially retired from the Air Force in 1980.
In 1966, Charles married the love of his life, Jeannene “Poohbear” Nettle. Together they shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage until her passing on November 3, 2025. Charles often affectionately referred to his two favorite ladies as his “two best gals,” giving Jeannene the nickname “Poohbear” and his daughter Michelle the nickname “Bird.” His perfect day was simply spending time with his beloved Poohbear, enjoying the peaceful retirement they shared in the dream home they built together.
Charles was an amazing husband and father who expressed love and kindness to everyone he met. He always put others before himself and taught his family the importance of being selfless, compassionate, driven, and kind, and to always give to others. Talking about his many adventures and memories often brought laughter and joy to those around him.
He loved music, especially classic rock and roll, though in quieter moments he enjoyed listening to classical music. He was a fan of Sunday NASCAR races and football, and one of his most cherished traditions was taking annual father-daughter trips to Texas to attend NASCAR racing events with Michelle—memories she will forever treasure. His favorite color was green, and he found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, especially time spent with family and friends.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Michelle McMillan and her husband Eric McMillan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and his beloved fur baby, Tallie.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his compassionate caregivers, Tina Payne, Tina Thompson, and Mikala Lunsford, for the care and kindness they showed him.
Charles will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his service to his country, and the kindness and generosity he showed to everyone he met. His legacy of love, strength, and compassion will live on in all who knew him.
