It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Romine, who peacefully left this world on September 17, 2023, at his home in Oklahoma City, OK, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 17, 1955, and his memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kristi, children Brent Romine and Kendal and his son-in-law, Tobi as well as Melissa Nelson, his daughter from his first marriage; stepmother Mary Romine; brothers Don Romine and Darin Troutman; and a niece and many nephews. John was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Romine, his father, Don Romine, and two brothers, Joe Romine and Davey Romine.
A man of many passions, John Romine was an avid hunter and fisherman. Yet, it was the game of golf that truly captured his heart. On the greens, he found not only a sport but a lifelong passion that brought him immense joy.
John attended Putnam City High School, leaving before graduating to join the Army in 1974. He achieved the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge in 1977. Although he earned a GED when he joined the Army, he always wished he could receive his high school diploma from Putnam City. This wish was fulfilled in a special ceremony at Putnam City High School on November 9, 2018, during the Veterans Day Assembly, at which John was the guest of honor. John also obtained an Associate of Science Degree in Oil and Gas Field Management from OSU in 1988.
John’s career in the oil and gas industry began as a draftsman, and like so many, he rode the roller coaster of boom and bust throughout his career. Necessity or opportunity led him to work for a number of different oil and gas companies, most notably among them Conoco, Pioneer Natural Resources, Chesapeake, and Continental Resources. He treasured the enduring friendships he made with colleagues at these companies. He retired from Continental Resources in 2014, where he was Manager of Geoscience Services.
John became a 32nd degree mason through Siloam Lodge where he greatly valued the dedicated brothers he made. In addition, he was a member of the India Shrine and its brotherhood.
As we mourn the loss of John, we also celebrate the incredible life he lived and the profound impact he had on those who were fortunate to be a part of his world. His legacy of love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Visitation will be Friday, September 22, 2023 from 4 - 8 PM at Bill Merritt Funeral Service (6201 NW 39th Expy, Bethany, OK 73008). A funeral service to honor and remember John will be held on Saturday, September 23, at 10 AM at One Church OKC (7941 NW 23rd St, Bethany, OK 73008) followed by a graveside service at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery (7500 W Britton Rd, Oklahoma City, OK 73132). We invite all friends and family to join us in celebrating his life and sharing our cherished memories of a remarkable man.
