In the Care of Jonhs-Ridout’s Funeral Parlors
Shag Harris, age 53, of Prairieville, LA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, AL on Saturday, March 26th. Shag was a true warrior and fought hard for 18 days after he suffered a massive heart attack. Shag will be deeply missed by so many loved ones and friends. He was so proud of his boys and their accomplishments, and was definitely one of their biggest fans. His life-long dream was to be a pilot and he achieved that goal about 2 years ago. He loved flying his plane in his spare time if he was not attending one of the boys sporting events.
Shag is survived by his wife of almost 26 years, Karen Harris, and his sons Logan and Chase, his in-laws William (Bill) and Sandra Russ, his niece Kimberly Harris Johnson and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his son, Miles Dylan Harris; parents, Joel and Wanda Harris; and his brother, Joel Harris, Jr.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the CICU staff at Baton Rouge General Hospital, the CICU staff at UAB Hospital, Ira at John-Ridout’s Funeral Home and our friends and family that offered support, prayers and love to us during this difficult time.
Shag’s remains took one final flight home from Birmingham, AL to Gonzales, LA last week and was flown by his instructor/friend, Scott Wilson and Michael Duplantis. He received a water salute and as we stepped off the plane, Taps was played and was greeted by all his pilot buddies to pay their respects.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 8th at 1pm at Port Hudson National Cemetery in Zachary, LA. Shag was a Marine and will be buried with Military Honors. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 9th at our home at 4pm.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.johnsridouts.com for the HARRIS family.
