Carolyn Garrick Stern, 79, of Birmingham died July 2, 2020. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Bernard Stern; sister, Sharon Garrick; son, Wally Wailes; daughter, Wendy Ten Eyck (Tom); grandchildren, Garrick Hoffman, Maggie Hoffman, Austin Duckworth, Sarah Duckworth, Francie Outlaw (Matt); great-grandchildren Mills Outlaw and Saylor Outlaw; and many other friends and relatives. She is predeceased by her parents, Walter B. Garrick and Velma Garrick Morton; her sister, Sandra Bowen; and her son, Wayne Wailes. Carolyn grew up in the East Lake area of Birmingham and graduated from Woodlawn High School. She received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from UAB. During her varied career, she was secretary to the editor and later religion reporter at the Birmingham Post Herald. She also worked at UAB Special Studies, the Birmingham Historical Society, Cooking Light and Progressive Farmer magazines at Southern Progress Corp where she authored two books. Carolyn was very outgoing and loved people, especially children. She ran "Camp Granny" at her home several years for her grandchildren in the summer which provides many happy memories for all. She and her husband, Bernard, also owned and ran a bed and breakfast in Ashville, Alabama, called Cove Cottage. A graveside service will be held July 5th 10:00AM at Elmwood Cemetery, block 40.
