
Charlotte Ann Gilmore Smith of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, gained her angel wings on Saturday, November 7, 2020. Charlotte was born in Durant, Mississippi on September 10, 1927. She graduated high school in Durant, MS. She attended The College of Charleston in South Carolina, earning a BA in History, with a minor in French. She met Josiah, her husband of 60 years at the college. They were married in 1948 in Charleston, South Carolina. They lived in several states before settling in Birmingham, Alabama. Charlotte was a Real Estate Agent in Birmingham before she retired. Charlotte loved to garden - she and Josiah spent many days working in their yard together. Charlotte loved to watch and feed the birds and other animals that were attracted to her yard.
Charlotte is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Edward Lee Gilmore and Eliza Bell Edwards Gilmore; her husband, Josiah Edward Smith, Jr.; her siblings - Robert Earl Gilmore; Martha Lee Gilmore Fortner (Heuston Turner Fortner); Ruth Clarice Gilmore Cope (Ike E Cope); Doris Jane Gilmore Kimball (McGrew Kimball); Elba Jewell Gilmore Bell (John Lawson Bell); Jason Elijah Gilmore (Kathleen Leary Gilmore); and Murray Loraine Gilmore (Elizabeth Ann Pompeo Gilmore).
She is survived by her daughter, Sallie Rutherfoord Smith, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; a host of nieces and nephews, including Jane Fortner Ronningen, Virginia Lee Gilmore O’Brien, Frank E. Smith and William Manley McNaught; and a cousin, Kim Edwards, and friends.
Burial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Mountain Brook, Alabama, on Thursday, November 12, at 10 AM. You may make a memorial donation to St. Luke’s Church, 3736 Montrose Road, Mountain Brook, Alabama 35213 or a charity of your choice.
