Dr. Nathan (Nick) Goldstein III grew up on a farm in Lake Village, Arkansas. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Illinois in 1966 and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1970. He completed two years of residency at the University of Chicago. In 1972, he was Chief Resident in Pediatrics at Indiana University.
Dr. Goldstein served as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine and Kansas University School of Medicine and worked in private practice in Amarillo, Texas for 15 years. While in Amarillo, he also served as Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Texas Tech School of Medicine. After private practice Dr. Goldstein embarked upon a second career as Chief Medical Officer of Northwest Texas Hospital Healthcare System, a position he held for 20 years until his retirement.
Throughout his time in Amarillo, he was an active participant in the city’s nonprofit community. He was a member of the Amarillo Coalition of Health Services, the Children’s Health Foundation, and the First Care Quality Assurance Committee. He was honored by Catholic Family Services for the voluntary care he provided to infants and children via that agency. As a member of the Medical Advisory Board of Planned Parenthood, he received the Early B. Lokey Medical Service Award, one of its highest honors for a medical provider. He was President of the Board of Directors of the Bridge, a children’s advocacy center he supported enthusiastically for many years.
He was an enthusiastic hobbyist, rotating through an interesting array of pursuits including, plant propagation, photography, tropical and goldfish, and – his most enduring passion – gadgets and computers. Dr. Goldstein was known for his sense of humor and storytelling (which was only occasionally appropriate) and for being a loyal and devoted friend. He was exceedingly proud of his family and will be missed greatly.
