

Sandra Jones Thomasson “Sandy” passed away peacefully on January 7, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of Vera Virginia Allen Jones and James Wilmer Jones. She was born and raised in Evanston, IL where she attended Evanston Township High School. She loved music, playing the cello and singing in a Motown band while growing up. She graduated from Connecticut College with a degree in Economics. Upon graduation, she met the love of her life, Albert Thomasson, while he was in the Navy’s Submarine School in Groton, CT. They were engaged after three weeks and happily married for 53 years.
Sandy adapted quickly to life in Birmingham and making a difference here. She loved to volunteer and participate in many charitable and civic organizations including the Junior League of Birmingham. As an avid knitter and seamstress, she would donate knit hats and hand-sewn gowns to local hospitals. Sandy had a generous spirit and would always be there for friends and family, often behind the scenes.
Her amazing organizational skills were appreciated as the Logistics Coordinator for Leadership Birmingham, as the long -time treasurer for The Little Garden Club, as co-Chair for the Museum Ball and in bringing the WTA Tennis Tournament to Birmingham in the 80s.
Family and friends were always the highest priority for Sandy. She loved her Queen of Diamonds Bridge Group and Supper Club where she found a community of strong women enjoying life and supporting each other. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Albert F. Thomasson. She will be remembered by her daughter Leigh (Lawson) Brown of Venice, California, her son Dan (Carey) Thomasson of Birmingham, Alabama and her grandchildren Isabelle Brown, Maggie Brown, Flynn Thomasson and Hollis Thomasson. She is also survived by her beloved sisters Vera “Tinny” (Myles) Weintraub of New York and Nancy (Jim) Freeman of Iowa. Known to her grandchildren as “Sassy”, her intelligence, quick wit and generous spirit will live on through them and be missed by many.
The family is grateful for the loving care and compassion of Gwen, Coretta, Jackie, Pat, JoAnn and the dedicated medical care of Dr Jay Whatley.
The family will have a private service to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to King’s Home, Founders Place at St Luke’s Episcopal Church, or your favorite charity.
