Thomas Luther Hays (Tom), age 71, passed away from unexpected health complications in the early morning of Friday, December 22, 2023. He was born on January 27, 1952 in Oneonta, Alabama to Luther and Ruth Hays. He was the middle child of three, survived by his older sister Dr. Ann Hays Siler, and younger brother, Tim Hays. He is also survived by his loving and supportive former wife, Dr. Sarah J. Hays. Tom and Sarah were married for 25 years and had two children together, daughter Emily Sarah Hays (34, Birmingham), and son Thomas Luther Hays, II (Luke – 32, Birmingham).
Tom attended Athens College for undergraduate work where he earned a Bachelor of Science. He then went on to obtain a Master of Arts in Education from The University of Alabama in Birmingham and a Master of Business Administration from Samford University. Tom had a long successful career in banking and finance.
Tom was a man of many interests. He enjoyed spending weekends at Inland Lake with his family, listening to records, playing spades, and watching movies. He was an avid Alabama football fan – a passion he shared with his son, with whom he travelled to many home, away, and championship games to cheer on the Crimson Tide together. His number one rule was to not boo the opposing team, as they were not worthy of acknowledgement. A gifted singer in his own right, Tom loved music and enjoyed listening to his daughter play piano, often providing her with sheet music of his favorite songs.
Tom’s charismatic energy will be missed by many. A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 3:00pm at Vulcan Park & Museum. Flowers may be sent to 1701 Valley View Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209 with attn: Hays Service.
