Jewel was born on April 20, 1940 in Jefferson City, MO. One of seven children, she was the daughter of a pastor who grew up in church. Although she was raised in Kansas City, MO., she moved to Pasadena in the 1960s as part of the Great Migration of African Americans who relocated west to find better opportunities. Jewel established a successful career in bookkeeping/accounting until her retirement in the early 1980s.
Jewel married Willie Miller In 1959 and had two children, Steve and Brent. After that marriage ended, she married Charles “Ray” Ransom in 1967 and had a daughter, Shannon Jewel Miller. She also gained four bonus children: Ronda, Relda, Rita and Randy from Ray’s previous marriage. She treasured all of her children.
When that marriage dissolved, Jewel met and married her true soulmate, Earl White, in 1992. Earl had three children: Linda, Timothy and Earl. The couple moved to Las Vegas in retirement and built a beautiful home and life together, traveling and attending to their grandchildren, gardening and entertaining friends and family. Earl passed away in 2011.
Jewel never met a stranger. As her name suggests, she was truly a gem who was always eager to help those in need, share what she had and light up the room with her smile, comedic personality and style (she adored all things leopard print, sequins, furs and gold accents).
Jewel was a devoted mother and grandmother who constantly encouraged her family to be happy and successful. She was in constant prayer for her family and when she thought a serious matter occurred, she would call together a group of friends – her prayer warriors – to pray on their behalf.
Jewel is survived by her children: William “Brent” Miller and Shannon Jewel Miller and son-in-law Darrell D. Miller; grandchildren Kent Andrew Ewing, Taylor Jewel Suero (Johan Suero), Kathlyn Francesca Miller-Francis, Amari Grace Miller; great-granddaughters: Noa Suero and Emi Suero; sister Marlene Roberts and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held Thursday, December 15, 2022 at 11 a.m.; at Green Acres Mortuary, Bloomington, CA. Donations can be made to the Salvation Army, an organization Jewel was passionate about, at salvationarmy.org.
