Alice Marie Wainwright, 62, of Bloomington, passed away at 10:35 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2012 at her home surrounded by her family, after a three-year battle with lung cancer.
She was born October 3, 1949 in Kankakee, daughter of Stanley Parkhill and Ledelia Mae Rednour Monteith. On July 21, 1979 she married George Wainwright in Funks Grove.
Surviving her are her husband, George of Bloomington; two daughters, Phoebe Wainwright of Chicago and Paige Wainwright of Bloomington. Also surviving are one brother, Don Monteith of Indianapolis, IN and one sister, Jane (Michael) Fahey of Williams Bay, WI.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Alice was a 1972 graduate of Illinois State University, where she received a Bachelor's Degree in
Elementary Education. With that degree she went on to teach 2nd grade at Robein School in East Peoria for 34 years.
Inspired by each child's creativity and curiosity "Ms. Wainwright" brought the excitement of dinosaurs, Colonial America, and National Pig Day to life in the classroom. Early on she coached softball and track and was always an active member of
the IEA-NEA. Her efforts were honored with multiple nominations by her students for "Who's Who Among America's Teachers."
"Ms. Wainwright" retired in 2005 and filled every minute of her time reading, soaking up favorite movies and garage saling for hidden treasures. Always passionate for pigs, Alice collected hundreds of books, toys and games featuring her favorite porkers.
Her kindness and sense of humor were immediately endearing. She made everyone her favorite without ever playing favorites. She had a perfect balance of independent strength and compassion for everyone. To meet her was to love her and so she will be deeply missed by all.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012 at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington, where visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. The Rev. Vaughn Hoffman will officiate. The interment will immediately follow services at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Bloomington.
