Don came to Bloomington in the spring of 1950 to pitch for the State Farm Chief’s fast pitch softball team. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953, where he sat with other troops in a foxhole during an atom bomb test.
Returning to civilian life, Don joined his father-in-law in the Salerno Biscuit Co. distributorship, and continued pitching for various softball teams in the area until a serious illness in 1956. Major surgery in 1962 returned him to good health and his love of softball put him back on the mound. He was inducted into the Amateur Softball Hall of Fame, and the Port Huron, MI Athletes Hall of Fame.
Don was the owner of Bloomington Biscuit Co. until 1987. He and Ginny retired, traveled two winters in their RV, and then moved to Sugar Mill Country Club at New Smyrna Beach, FL. They spent 18 wonderful years there. For health reasons and to be closer to family, they returned to Bloomington in 2008. While in Florida, he was a mentor to several young boys, served on the board of Habitat for Humanity, and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of Crestwicke Country Club.
Besides softball and golf, Don enjoyed his family and friends. He loved deeply and was loved deeply in return; he will be missed forever.
