

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Normal, with the Rev. Dr. Ray Owens and her niece, the Rev. Katie Hines-Shah, officiating. Entombment will be in East Lawn Mausoleum, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington. Memorials may be directed to the Bloomington-Normal Bass Club (referencing Joan Martoglio), where a cancer charity tournament will be established in her name.
Joan was born Feb. 15, 1944, in Bemidji, Minn., the daughter of E. Glenn and Esther N. Saunders Hines. She married Gerald Martoglio on Sept. 21, 1963, in Bemidji, Minn. He survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Pam (Dan) Smith, West Lafayette, Ind.; a son, Christopher Martoglio, Bloomington; two granddaughters, Erin and Lauren Smith; a brother, Tom Hines, Oak Harbor, Wash.; a sister, Jill Pellegrino, Roscoe; three nieces, Angie Pellegrino, Katie Hines-Shah and Allison Tabacco-Hines.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Joan was the granddaughter of William “Old Bill” Hines, who founded the town of Hines, Minn., where the family homestead, where she grew up, still survives and is used to this day. She graduated from Blackduck High School where she remained in contact with her friends, “The Big 8.” She attended Bemidji State University and studied chemistry.
She was a seamstress, working for Bergner's and Gates Bridal Shop for many years.
She was president of the Sunrise Ladies Bowling League and a past member of Lakeside Country Club. During her children's school years, Joan was a longtime room mother at Colene Hoose Elementary School and was also active in the PTO. Joan was a very generous and giving person, always putting others first. She enjoyed gardening and swimming, her backyard was her oasis. She dearly loved her cats, Nimbi and Spunky.
